The Faroese Football Championship 2009 was played in the first Faroese league called Vodafonedeildin and was overall the 67th season. It started on April 3, 2009 with the game of Víkingur Gøta against ÍF Fuglafjørður and ended on October 3, 2009.
Promoted 07 Vestur was the 25th participant in the top division after the introduction of the league game in 1947 , AB Argir returned to this after a year. Thus, with AB, B36 Tórshavn and HB Tórshavn , three clubs from the same city played in the first division again (Argir was incorporated into Tórshavn in 1997). HB Tórshavn became champion, who could win the title for the 20th time. Defending champion EB / Streymur finished in second place. On the other hand, KÍ Klaksvík , who played in second class for the first time in their history, had to relegate , and 07 Vestur after a year of first class.
Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 3.33 per game, which was the highest average since 2004 . EB / Streymur achieved the highest victory with a 7-0 home game on matchday 17 against KÍ Klaksvík. The highest-scoring game was between Víkingur Gøta and 07 Vestur on matchday three with a 6-2 win.
mode
In the Vodafonedeildin , each team played three times against each other on 27 match days. Due to the previous year's placement, EB / Streymur , HB Tórshavn , B36 Tórshavn , NSÍ Runavík and Víkingur Gøta played an additional home game. The team with the best points at the end of the season was clear as the champions of this league, the last two teams relegated to the 1st Deild , the Faroese second division.
Season course
Championship decision
HB Tórshavn was right at the top of the table. The third game, however, was lost 2-1 at NSÍ Runavík , who then took first place from B36 Tórshavn on the fourth matchday . On the sixth game day, the lead changed again after a 2-1 home defeat by NSÍ against Víkingur Gøta , so that HB was back on top. They did not give up this leadership until the end of the season. The highest lead over the alternating runner-up was ten points between the 19th and 21st matchday. The final decision about the championship was made on the penultimate matchday. The runner-up EB / Streymur was able to win 3: 2 against ÍF Fuglafjørður , but at the same time HB Tórshavn also won 4: 2 against KÍ Klaksvík , the 5-point gap remained unattainable.
Relegation battle
07 Vestur started the season with three defeats. It wasn't until the fourth match day that the first win came with a 4-2 win over B36 Tórshavn. Until matchday 18, when B68 Toftir was beaten 1-0, they had to wait for the next victory. Two more wins against Víkingur Gøta and B36 Tórshavn were not enough to keep the league, however, relegation was clear after the 25th match day. Their own away game was lost against ninth-placed KÍ Klaksvík with 1: 2, at the same time the eight-placed B36 Tórshavn won 5-2 against NSÍ Runavík and was thus with eight points with two remaining game days ahead.
KÍ Klaksvík drew twice at the beginning. The next four games were lost, so that the team found themselves at the bottom of the table from the fourth day of the game. The first victory was achieved with a 3-2 against ÍF Fuglafjørður only on the 13th matchday, the next success followed on the matchday. The gap to eighth place was only one point at this point, on the twelfth matchday it was seven. The next games went better and more victories could be celebrated, but it wasn't enough to improve their position. The final decision was made on the last day of the match. KÍ Klaksvík gambled away the theoretical chance of relegation with a 0-2 home defeat to EB / Streymur, in the 52nd minute the team fell behind due to Arnbjørn T. Hansen . A win would have been of no use due to the 1-1 draw between eighth-placed B36 Tórshavn against B68 Toftir, but Jákup á Borg only equalized in the 87th minute .
