The Faroese Football Championship 1998 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was overall the 56th season. It started on May 2, 1998 with TB Tvøroyri's game against VB Vágur and ended on October 3, 1998.

The promoted SÍ Sumba and TB Tvøroyri returned to the top division after six and one year respectively. Champion HB Tórshavn , which could thus win the title for the 15th time. Defending champion B36 Tórshavn finished in third place. TB Tvøroyri, however, had to relegate after a year of first class.

Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 4.28 per game, which was the highest average since 1972 . The highest victories were at 11: 1 in the home game of GÍ Gøta against SÍ Sumba on matchday 15, which was also the highest-scoring game, as well as in KÍ Klaksvík's 10-0 home win against TB Tvøroyri on matchday 12 and 10-0 in the away game of B36 Tórshavn at SÍ Sumba on the twelfth matchday.

mode

In the 1st Deild , each team played twice against each other on 18 match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was clear as champions of this league, the last team relegated to the 2nd Deild . The ninth placed also had to play two relegation games against the runner-up of the 2nd Deild to stay in the 1st Deild .

Season course

Championship decision

NSÍ Runavík were at the front for the first two matchdays. After a 4-0 home game against tied pursuers HB Tórshavn , both teams swapped places. HB was able to extend the lead to five points before the first defeat was conceded on the tenth match day at 2: 3 in the home game against B36 Tórshavn . However, this was to be the only defeat of the entire season. After five wins in a row, the lead increased to seven points, but the championship decision was not made until the penultimate matchday. The previously runner-up B36 Tórshavn lost his game at GÍ Gøta with 2: 5, with B36 already taking the lead in the seventh minute, but before the break GÍ pulled away 3-1. HB Tórshavn meanwhile won 4-1 against SÍ Sumba and could not be overtaken. After an initial deficit in the tenth minute, HB turned the game in their favor.

Relegation battle

After a 2-2 draw at the beginning against VB Vágur , TB Tvøroyri lost three times in a row and fell to last place. The first and only victory came on the 14th matchday in the away game against ÍF Fuglafjørður 2-1. As a result, the relegation place was temporarily occupied, through further defeats TB occupied the end of the table again from the 16th match day. The last game of the season was lost against GÍ Gøta with 1: 5, already in the second minute TB got behind a goal by Søren S. Jørgensen and ran behind this the entire season. A draw would have been enough for ninth place due to the better goal difference.

SÍ Sumba started the season with two wins and two defeats, after the fourth matchday the team was in fifth place. After that, however, there was no further triple point win until the end of the season. On the last day of the match, eighth place could have been achieved with a win, but Sumba lost this game with 2: 5 against KÍ Klaksvík . At the break it was still 0-0.

ÍF Fuglafjørður played in the first six games in addition to a defeat five times and finished in seventh place. Four defeats in a row let the team slip to the penultimate place, a 6-0 against SÍ Sumba on the eleventh matchday led to a position improvement by one place. This place was held until the end of the season despite the fact that no further victory was achieved. On the last day of the match, ÍF lost 1:10 against HB Tórshavn and fell behind in the third minute. Eighth place could still be held because the next two teams also lost their games.
