Ion Geolgău (born February 20, 1961 in Pieleşti , Dolj County ) is a former Romanian football player and current coach . The midfielder denied 303 games in the highest Romanian football league, the Divizia A .

Career as a player

Ion Geolgău's career began in 1976 when he joined the first team squad for his home club Universitatea Craiova at the age of 15 . On November 7, 1976, he played his first assignment in the highest Romanian football league, Divizia A (now League 1 ). After he was only used irregularly at first, he became a regular player in the 1979/80 season and thus had a large share in winning the championship. This title win could be repeated a year later, including the cup .

The most successful season in the career of Geolgău was the 1982/83 season . In the league it was only enough to runner-up behind Dinamo Bucharest , but he won the Romanian Cup again and reached the semi-finals in the UEFA Cup , where the club was eliminated only on the away goals rule against Benfica Lisbon .

In the following years Geolgău could not build on the great successes with Uni Craiova, but remained a regular in the top group of the league and in the European Cup. After he had lost his regular place in the 1989/90 season, he left the club during the winter break and moved to league rivals FC Argeş Piteşti .

In the summer of 1990, Geolgau moved abroad and joined the Cypriot club Aris Limassol , before moving to Avenir Lembeek in Belgium a year later . After only a year he returned to Romania and played for Jiul IELIF Craiova in Divizia C for a year before ending his career in 1993.

National team

Ion Geolgău played 24 games for the Romanian national football team , scoring three goals. He made his debut on September 10, 1980 in the friendly against Bulgaria when he came on for Tudorel Stoica in the 60th minute . He had to wait more than a year for his second appearance, but even in 1982 he couldn't get beyond the role of a substitute player.

It was not until 1983 that Geolgău became a regular and scored his country for the 1984 European Championship with his goal on November 30, 1983 against Czechoslovakia . There, national coach Mircea Lucescu did not call into his squad .

In the following years Geolgău was rarely used and played his last international match on June 1, 1988 in a friendly against the Netherlands .

Career as a coach

After the end of his playing career, Geolgău became a football coach. In the 1994/95 season he looked after Jiul Petroşani in Divizia B before he became assistant coach of his home club Universitatea Craiova .

In 1998 he moved to the Faroe Islands , where he took over the record champions HB Tórshavn . With HB he could in 1998 Double of League and Cup victory win. In the summer break of 2002 , the club separated from him and Geolgău hired from the beginning of the 2003 season at local rivals B36 Tórshavn . Here he won the cup again .

After the season Geolgău left the Faroe Islands and moved to Iceland to Fram Reykjavík . After 8th place in the championship , the club separated from him again.

In February 2012 he signed a three-month contract as assistant coach to Aurel Țicleanu at the Kuwaiti second division club Al Tadamon .
