The Faroese Football Championship 2002 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was overall the 60th season. It started on May 5, 2002 and ended on October 5, 2002.
Promoted TB Tvøroyri returned after three years in the top division, Skála ÍF was the 22nd participant in this after the introduction of the league game in 1947 . Champion HB Tórshavn , which could thus win the title for the 16th time. Defending champion B36 Tórshavn ended up in fifth place. TB Tvøroyri, however, had to relegate after a year of first class.
Compared to the previous season, the goal rate worsened to 3.66 per game, which was the lowest average since 1999 . The biggest victory scored Skála ÍF with an 8-0 in the home game against TB Tvøroyri on the 17th matchday. The highest-scoring game was played by HB Tórshavn and TB Tvøroyri on matchday nine with a score of 9: 3.
mode
In the 1st Deild , each team played twice against each other on 18 match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was the champions of this league, the last team was relegated to the 2nd Deild , in the event of a tie, the direct comparison decided. The ninth placed also had to play two relegation games against the runner-up of the 2nd Deild to stay in the 1st Deild . Since there was then a tie after adding up the results, a final playoff was played.
Season course
Championship decision
HB Tórshavn got off to a good start to the season and celebrated four wins in a row. It was only on the eighth day of the match that the team lost 2-1 away at EB / Streymur for the first time. Nevertheless, the championship lead could be held until the eleventh game day. After further defeats followed on this and the next day, NSÍ Runavík took over the top position. They fought their way up from last place. After a 4-0 defeat at the beginning against HB, only one more defeat followed up to and including the 14th match day. On the following day there was a direct encounter with HB Tórshavn, this game was also lost 2-0 at home, whereupon the table leadership changed for the last time. The championship decision was made two game days before the end of the game. While HB won their home game against EB / Streymur 2-0, their pursuers KÍ Klaksvík (away with 1: 2 against VB Vágur ) and NSÍ Runavík (at home with 1: 2 against B68 Toftir ) lost their respective games and were able to win thus no longer catch up.
Relegation battle
Promoted team Skála ÍF remained the first 14 games without a win and consistently finished last from the third day of the game. It was not until the 15th matchday that the first success was celebrated with a 3-1 win against EB / Streymur. This was enough to leave the last place. With two rounds to go, Skála won 8-0 against TB Tvøroyri, who had also been promoted, and thus sealed their relegation. TB was able to win the first game of the season against VB Vágur 1-0, but this should remain the only win of the season. As a result, the crash followed to the penultimate place, on match day 15 then Skála passed.
After the relegation was decided, the question of the relegation participant remained open. This was only determined on the last day of the match. Skála ÍF won 3-2 away at B36 Tórshavn . Since EB / Streymur, who consistently finished eighth since the third match day, lost 2-1 at home to GÍ Gøta at the same time , Skála was able to overtake this team and thus secure relegation. After equalizing in the 69th minute for EB / Streymur, GÍ scored the winning goal in the 83rd minute. However, due to the direct comparison, a draw would not have been enough to hold the position.
