The Faroese Football Championship 1976 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was the 34th season overall. It started on April 25, 1976 and ended on September 26, 1976.
Newcomer NSÍ Runavík was the twelfth participant in the top division after the introduction of the league game in 1947 . Master was TB Tvøroyri , who could win the title for the fourth time. Defending champion HB Tórshavn finished in second place. However, NSÍ Runavík had to relegate after a year of first class. NSÍ remained over the entire season without winning points, which was unique after the introduction of the 1st Deild . Only TB Tvøroyri 1963 , VB Vágur 1949 , B36 Tórshavn II 1948 and MB Miðvágur 1947 remained without a point in the Meistaradeildin .
Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 4.19 per game, which is the second highest average after 1998 after the introduction of the 1st Deild . This is also the best rate since the 1972 Meistaradeildin season . The highest victory achieved KÍ Klaksvík with a 10-1 in the home game against NSÍ Runavík on the fourth matchday, which together with the 6: 5 between TB Tvøroyri and KÍ Klaksvík on the third matchday was the highest-scoring game.

With the introduction of the 1. Deild as a new league with seven teams, each team now played twice against each other on twelve match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was clear as champions of this league, the last team relegated to the 2nd Deild .
Season course
Championship decision
HB Tórshavn was permanently in first place from the second matchday after four wins from the first four games. The 3-1 away defeat against KÍ Klaksvík on matchday six did nothing to change that. After two more wins, HB met their direct rival TB Tvøroyri on matchday nine , who were only one point behind and were defeated 4: 3 in the first leg. After TB won the home game 4-2, there was a change at the top of the table. TB Tvøroyri was able to keep the distance until the end. The championship was decided on the 13th and penultimate matchday. HB won the away game against NSÍ Runavík 5-0, but as TB was able to win its home game 5-1 against ÍF Fuglafjørður , the team from Tvøroyri was the champions.
Relegation battle
NSÍ Runavík had no chance and was consistently in last place. All games were lost despite two close results. The relegation was determined after the 1: 3 defeat in the away game against the direct competitor ÍF Fuglafjørður on the twelfth game day, which could increase the gap to eight unassailable points.
