The Faroese Football Championship 1981 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was the 39th season overall. It started on April 26, 1981 and ended on September 20, 1981.

Promoted B68 Toftir was the 15th participant in the top division after the introduction of the league game in 1947 . Champion HB Tórshavn , which could thus win the title for the eleventh time. Defending champion TB Tvøroyri finished in second place. However, VB Vágur had to relegate for the first time as a founding member of 1. Deild .

Compared to the previous season, the goal rate worsened to 2.84 per game, which was the lowest average since the introduction of the 1st Deild in 1976 . This was also the worst rate since the Meistaradeildin season in 1962 . HB Tórshavn scored the biggest win with a 6-0 home game against TB Tvøroyri on matchday five. The highest-scoring game completed HB Tórshavn and KÍ Klaksvík with a 5-2 on the penultimate matchday.

Initially, TB Tvøroyri was at the top with three wins from the first three games, which had to be surrendered to HB Tórshavn after a 0-1 home game against ÍF Fuglafjørður , who in turn had their first defeat on the second matchday with a 0-1 home game GÍ Gøta conceded, but now had the better goal difference compared to the tied teams of GÍ and TB. In a direct duel against third-placed TB Tvøroyri on matchday five, a 6-0 home win was achieved, and the next three games were all won to zero. But since GÍ Gøta only made one draw and could otherwise also win all games, the 3-1 home win of GÍ against HB on matchday nine ensured a change at the top of the table. This lead only lasted until the next match day, when third-placed TB Tvøroyri sent GÍ Gøta 1-0 home and HB Tórshavn regained first place with a 4-0 home win against ÍF Fuglafjørður. But the next game HB lost 3-1 at home to B68 Toftir 3-1, which pushed TB Tvøroyri past with a 3-0 away win against ÍF Fuglafjørður. On the twelfth matchday, the two first-placed teams met and the game ended 1-1. GÍ Gøta, who were level on points with HB Tórshavn only one point behind TB, could not benefit from this as they only played 0-0 at B36 Tórshavn . On the penultimate match day TB Tvøroyri missed the chance to break away with a 0-0 home game against B68 Toftir, instead HB Tórshavn was now in first place after a 5-2 home win against KÍ Klaksvík thanks to the better goal difference. GÍ Gøta improved with a 5: 1 in the home game against VB Vágur in second place, so that now all three teams were tied on points before the last match day. GÍ missed all chances for the championship title with a 1-1 at B68 Toftir, while TB won 3-0 at KÍ Klaksvík. However, since HB also won 3-1 at B36 Tórshavn, the team from Tórshavn stayed in first place.

Relegation battle

VB Vágur lost the first two games, then drew 1-1 at home against KÍ Klaksvík, but was only able to free themselves from last place with a 2-1 away win against B36 Tórshavn. On this KÍ Klaksvík slipped after only two points from the first four games. With a 0-0 away game against ÍF Fuglafjørður, the team improved to seventh place and maintained this until the ninth matchday against B36 Tórshavn, who at least on the second matchday were able to win a double point with a 3-0 away match against KÍ. The next five games were all lost, on the ninth game day followed by a 2-0 victory, also against KÍ Klaksvík. Due to the better goal difference of B36, both teams swapped places. On the next match day, KÍ was able to win for the first time, a 2-0 home win against VB Vágur was recorded, so VB and B36 were relegated to seventh and eighth. On the eleventh game day, the last two teams met in a direct duel, which B36 Tórshavn won 3: 1 on the place of VB and thus the places were swapped again. On the penultimate match day, relegation was finally certain when VB Vágur lost 5-1 at GÍ Gøta, while B36 Tórshavn increased the gap to three unassailable points with a 2-0 away win against ÍF Fuglafjørður. The final 3-2 win by VB against ÍF on the last day of the game didn't help.
