The Faroese Football Championship 1978 was held in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was a total of the 36th season. It started on April 23, 1978 and ended on September 24, 1978.
Promoted MB Miðvágur returned to the top division after 30 years. Champion HB Tórshavn , which could thus win the title for the tenth time. HB remained undefeated for the entire season. After the introduction of the 1st Deild, only ÍF Fuglafjørður 1979 and B71 Sandur 1989 have managed this . Defending champion TB Tvøroyri finished in second place. Since the league was to be expanded to eight teams for the next season, there was no relegated team this year.
Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 3.29 per game. The biggest win scored TB Tvøroyri with a 7-0 in the away game against MB Miðvágur on the 13th and penultimate round, which was also the highest-scoring game.

Season course
TB Tvøroyri got off to a perfect start to the season with five wins from their first five games and was also in first place from the start. HB Tórshavn also remained undefeated in their first five games, but drew four times. In a direct duel between the two teams on the seventh matchday, HB beat TB 3-2 in front of their home crowd and was able to shorten the gap to two points. VB Vágur was still one point between the two teams, who suffered their first and up to this point only defeat at home against TB Tvøroyri on matchday two and 0-2 at home on matchday eight had to admit defeat against the new runner-up HB Tórshavn, while TB's advantage fell to one point due to the 0-0 draw against KÍ Klaksvík .
