1st deild 1995

The Faroese Football Championship 1996 was played in the 1st Deild called first Faroese league and was overall the 54th season. It started on April 28, 1996 and ended on October 19, 1996.

Promoted ÍF Fuglafjørður returned to the top division after two years. Champion was defending champion GÍ Gøta , who could win the title for the fourth time in a row and for the sixth time overall. For the first time since the introduction of the 1st Deild in 1976 , the championship was decided only by the goal difference. TB Tvøroyri , however, had to relegate after seven years of first class.

Compared to the previous season, the goal rate improved to 3.43 per game. The biggest win achieved GÍ Gøta with a 9-1 in the away game against B71 Sandur on matchday six. The highest-scoring game was between TB Tvøroyri and HB Tórshavn on matchday 16, which ended 2: 9.

mode

In the 1st Deild , each team played twice against each other on 18 match days. The team with the best points at the end of the season was clear as champions of this league, the last team relegated to the 2nd Deild . The ninth placed also had to play two relegation games against the runner-up of the 2nd Deild to stay in the 1st Deild . In the European Cup , a qualifying place for the UEFA Cup was lost in favor of a starting place in the Champions League .

Season course

Championship decision

GÍ Gøta had a real start-to-finish victory and led the table from the first to the last match day. The first defeat was on the seventh matchday in the home game against KÍ Klaksvík , which was lost with 1: 2. Before that, the gap to second place was four points, so the lead could be maintained. By the second defeat on the eleventh match day, the lead was increased to four points again when GÍ lost 3-2 at HB Tórshavn , from now on KÍ Klaksvík was the closest pursuer. GÍ Gøta was able to pull away by up to five points. On the 16th matchday there was a direct duel between the two teams, which GÍ lost again, this time with 0: 1. On the last two match days, both teams were tied at the top. On the last day of the match, the decision about the championship was made. However, since both second-placed KÍ Klaksvík (4-0 against B71 Sandur ) and first-placed GÍ Gøta (3-0 at TB Tvøroyri ) won their games, this table constellation remained, due to the better goal difference, GÍ Gøta was the champion . Both teams led 1-0 in their games after 30 minutes.

Relegation battle

B71 Sandur found himself in the lower half of the table for the entire season. With a 3-1 away win against B68 Toftir , the team temporarily moved to sixth place, but could not win in the next five games and thus fell to last place. This could only be left on the 14th matchday due to further victories. The league succeeded on the 17th matchday with a 1-0 home win against B36 Tórshavn . Rúni í Soylu scored the winning goal in the 75th minute.

B68 Toftir could not celebrate their first victory until matchday eight, when TB Tvøroyri was beaten 2-0 in the away game. Due to further successes, the seventh place was consistently occupied from the ninth game day. Four defeats in a row between the 14th and 17th matchday let the team slip back to eighth place.

FS Vágar consistently occupied the last two places with the exception of one match day. The first win of the season succeeded on the fifth match day with a 2-1 in the home game against ÍF Fuglafjørður , which the team climbed from last to penultimate place. A 1-0 home win against HB Tórshavn even brought eighth place for a short time after eight games. Of the next six games managed only one win in four defeats, which FS Vágar once again graced the bottom of the table. With a 5-1 win at home against direct competitor TB Tvøroyri on matchday 15, the places between the two teams were swapped.

TB Tvøroyri did not lose any of the first games, on the fifth match day the team conceded their first defeat in the home game against B36 Tórshavn 3-0. TB was able to hold onto sixth place until the sixth game day, after which the big crash followed, not a single one of the next eleven games was won. From the 15th match day, after a 1: 5 defeat at their direct competitor FS Vágar, the team took last place, only on the 17th match day achieved the next victory with a 2: 1 at B68 Toftir.

The last day of the match brought the final decision about the last three places. B68 Toftir was able to secure the league with a 1-0 win against the ninth-placed FS Vágar, the decisive goal came after 16 minutes. Since TB Tvøroyri lost 3-0 at home to GÍ Gøta, with the team trailing behind from the 24th minute, there were no further changes in position. Due to the goal difference worse by three goals, TB Tvøroyri was relegated from the first division.
