Miðvágur [ ˈmiːvɔavuɹ ] (translated: middle bay ; Danish Midvåg ) is a place in the Faroe Islands on the island of Vágar . It is one of the largest towns in the Faroe Islands and has been part of the newly formed municipality of Vágar ( Vága kommuna ) since 2009 . Miðvágur had exactly 1080 inhabitants at the beginning of 2016.

Miðvágur is located on the south coast of Vágar at the end of a long bay and extends inland further west towards Leitisvatn . The main road that connects Vágar Airport in the west of the island with the Vágar Tunnel in the northeast runs through Miðvágur . The place is one of the best places to catch pilot whales in the Faroe Islands . In 1899 the largest catch of all time in the Faroe Islands was made here. 1300 animals in a single day - at that time a vital vitamin supply for the islanders. The district number Markatal is 48.

The place has been inhabited in the Faroe Islands since the Viking Age, as excavations show. Since then there has also been a local court, the so-called Várting . Miðvágur is first mentioned in writing between 1350 and 1400 in the dog letter . The place is also listed in the royal property register ( Jarðarbókin ) from 1584.
In 1940, the writer Mikkjal Dánjalsson á Ryggi , who was mayor of Miðvágur from 1915 to 1919, published a local story entitled Miðvinga søga . It was the first time ever that the history of a place in the Faroe Islands had been written down.
Until the end of 2008 Miðvágur was also the seat and capital of the municipality of Miðvágur ( Miðvágs kommuna ) to which Vatnsoyrar , founded in 1921, was also the only inland town in the Faroe Islands . At the beginning of 2009 this was merged with Sandavágur to form the new municipality of Vágar ( Vága kommuna ). The administrative seat of this new municipality with almost 2000 inhabitants is now in Sandavágur.
Attractions
The village museum Kálvalíð is located a little above the village and is the oldest stone house in the Faroe Islands, which has served as a residence since the Middle Ages. It is built into the slope and has a grass roof so that it hardly stands out from the landscape. There are two rooms and a cowshed in the museum.
The house became famous as the pastor's seat for the whole of Vágar; it had this function since 1673. The most famous resident was the pastor's wife Beinta Broberg , who is the model for the novel Barbara .
The Viðarlundin á Tungu park was laid out behind the church on the site of the old cemetery from 1979 . It is owned by the Miðvágur municipality and covers an area of 1.17 hectares.
East of Miðvágur is the characteristic cliff Trøllkonufingur ('witch's fingers ') on the southeastern tip of the island .
To the west of the village lies the Leitisvatn, the largest inland lake in the Faroe Islands. At its southern end, the 50 m high Bøsdalafossur waterfall pours directly into the sea. The local sports club is called MB Miðvágur (Miðvágs Bóltfelag).
