Vatnsoyrar [ vatnsɔiɹaɹ ] on the island of Vágar is the only place in the Faroe Islands that is not by the sea. But it is located on the largest inland lake in the Faroe Islands, Sørvágsvatn .

  • Population: 54 (January 1, 2007)
  • Postal code: FO-385
  • Commune : Vága kommuna

Vatnsoyrar was founded in 1921, making it one of the youngest places in the archipelago. The Royal Air Force used during the British occupation of the Faroe Islands in World War II the Sørvágsvatn as natural airfield for seaplanes , while just west of the lake of Vagar Airport was built.

In Vatnsoyrar there is a small car museum ( Vatnsoyra Bilasavn ), including a Ford T from 1915 and a Ford TT truck from 1922. In 1922, the TT trucks were the first ever cars on the Faroe Islands.

There is also a door and window factory ( Vatnsoyra Snikkaravirki ) here.

Since 2006, the municipality has been planning a considerable expansion of the place with 25 new building plots, so that the number of inhabitants would more than double.
