General

Location and infrastructure

Sandavágur means beach bay, and in fact there is a small sandy beach in its bay. The village lies on the only road of the island, which now from Gásadalur over the Vágar Airport to Vágatunnilin leads. The immediate neighbor on the same bay is Miðvágur in the west.

In Sandavágur there is a guest house and a camping site, which is open all year round. There is a kiosk and some retail stores in the center of the village.

History and sights

Sandavágur was founded in the Faroe Islands during the Viking Age and can therefore look back on a good 1000 years of history. In 1956 excavations took place on the property in the center of the village of Einstjartoftir , during which the remains of the foundations of several buildings were found. One of them was built in the Viking Age, the other in the 14th or 15th centuries. After the end of the investigation, the excavated remains were left in place and covered with earth again, as restoration, similar to the one in the case of the buildings in Leirvík, did not seem worthwhile.

  • The striking church of Sandavágur was built in 1917 by the Tórshavn architect Magnus á Kamarinum, and it is not only a treasure from the outside, but also contains one of the most important archaeological finds of the Faroe Islands: the rune stone from Sandavágur, found in 1917 , see Sandavágsstein .
  • The monument to the politician and scientist VU Hammershaimb (1819–1909), Faroese priest and philologist, who was born in Sandavágur in 1819 on the farm Á Steig , is also worth seeing .
  • The traditional Á Steig farm can still be seen in the town center and can be viewed from the outside. He used to be known for the fact that his fields were among the most suitable areas for growing grain in all of the Faroe Islands. From 1555 to 1816 it was the residence of Lögmaður , the highest secular authority figure in the Faroe Islands.
  • The small park Viðarlundin á Abbreyt in the north of the village, which was laid out in the late 1980s and offers a beautiful view of the town and the bay, is also worth a visit.

In 1997 Sandavágur was awarded the prize for the most well-kept and cleanest village in the Faroe Islands . In 2003 it was repeated with the title of cleanest and greenest village in the Faroe Islands .
