Viðarlundin á Abbreyt is a park in the village of Sandavágur on the Faroese island of Vágar . It consists mainly of alder, spruce, ash and birch and is located in the northeast of the village at the foot of the 683 m high Malinstindur mountain . The Faroese word viðarlund literally means "wood" and describes a park or forest in the Faroe Islands , of which only 0.06% is forested.

The municipality of Sandavágur turned towards the end of the 1980s to the Forest Authority (Skógfriðingarnevndin) of the Faroe Islands with the request to create a park on the area called "Á Abbreyt". This request was granted on December 13, 1988, so that the planting could begin. This makes the park one of the youngest parks or forests in the Faroe Islands.

Viðarlundin á Abbreyt Park is owned by the Sandavágur Municipality (Sandavágs kommuna) and is located at a height of 20 m. ü. d. M. on the area of hall 150a. It covers a total of 7,340 m², making it one of the smallest parks or forests in the Faroe Islands. Mainly Japanese larch ( Larix kaempferi ), spruce ( Pinus contorta ), birch ( Betula pubescens ), maple ( Acer pseudoplatanus ) and willow were planted. Fuchsias ( Fuchsia magellanica ) and roses ( Rosa rugosa ) also bloom in the forest.

With their cool, humid climate, the Faroe Islands are extremely unsuitable for trees to thrive, because the top of the soil is relatively thin and tree roots offer little support. It is not uncommon for strong winds to blow, which can uproot trees, and it happens that the trees fall out in a mild January or February and are surprised in spring by suddenly falling frost.

The Viðarlundin á Abbreyt is - besides the church from 1917, in which a rune stone called Sandavág stone from the time of the Vikings is kept, and the monument to the politician and scientist VU Hammershaimb , who was born in Sandavágur - the third important attraction of the municipality of Sandavágur, as it is here shows that a forest or a park can definitely exist on the Faroe Islands. Like all forests and parks in the Faroe Islands outside the capital Tórshavn , Viðarlundin á Abbreyt is also fenced. It has two entrances and is criss-crossed by a paved walkway with benches. The park extends over a gently sloping terrain at the foot of the Malinstindur mountain (683 m) and offers a beautiful view over the village of Sandavágur on the bay of the same name. The park can be reached from the town center via a wooden footbridge over a stream.
