Beinta Broberg

Beinta Kristina Broberg , Danish : Bente Christine Broberg , (* around 1667 in Tórshavn / Faroe Islands ; † February 17, 1752 ) is the real person behind the fictional character Barbara by Jørgen-Frantz Jacobsen - and thus one of the most famous Faroese women .

Beinta was born in Tórshavn around 1667 as the daughter of Peder Sørensen Broberg (? –1695) and Birgitte Marie Jensdatter Bøgvad (? –1715). Both parents were Danish . She herself was married three times

1. around 1695 with the parish priest Jónas Jónasen (around 1660 - around 1700). He came from Denmark and was a priest for the North Islands based in Viðareiði .
2. around 1702 with the parish priest Niels Gregersen Aagaard, (1672 - April 18, 1706). When he arrived in the Faroe Islands from Denmark, he and Beinta moved to Miðvágur on Vágar .
3. 1706 with the parish priest Peder Ditlevsen Arhboe, (23 November 1675 - 7 January 1756), successor of Aagaard on Vágar. But in 1718 he was removed from office because of repeated disputes with the locals.

In Faroese tradition, Beinta Broberg is a kind of femme fatale . There she is called Illa Beinta (the bad Beinta) because she was held responsible for the untimely death of her first two husbands and for the - presumed - mental illness of her third husband. In addition, they were all pastors, and that provided enough material, not only for legends, but also for two novels and finally the most expensive Danish feature film of all time:

• In 1927 Hans Andrias Djurhuus wrote his novella Beinta (in Faroese ).
• Jørgen-Frantz Jacobsen was a younger colleague who wrote in Danish . He picked up the fabric and projected it onto his unhappy love - Barbara . When Jacobsen died at the age of only 38, the manuscript was incomplete and was published the following year. However, the novel Barbara turned out to be a piece of world literature. Within a few years it was translated into various languages.
• The Danish doctor and filmmaker Nils Malmros was taken with the novel as a teenager. He moved to the Faroe Islands specifically to become a doctor at the regional hospital in Tórshavn to familiarize himself with the country, before he made the film Barbara in 1996 , which had its world premiere in 1997 in the House of the North . As early as 1961 there was a film adaptation by UFA , but it was all too free with the novel.

Surname

Beinta is a Faroese woman's name and comes from Benedikta (Faro. Benadikta). The Danish form Bente is better known in Germany .

The nominative form Beinta is inflected as Beintu in all other cases (accusative, dative and genitive) in Faroese.

The name Barbara also exists in Faroese in exactly this form (is inflected analogously as Barbaru), but has nothing to do with Beinta , but was Jørgen-Frantz Jacobsen's idea to describe an unhappy love (in fact his cousin Estrid Bannister Good) .
