Markatal (yield measure)
The Markatal (literally: district number ) is the measure of agricultural yield on the Faroe Islands .
The word is made up of Faroese mørk ( plural merkur , common Germanic related to mark ) and tal (old Germanic related to number ). As in German, both terms are feminine . Literally, markatal means “number of marks” or better “number of marks”.
A mørk (mk.) As an agricultural unit of measurement corresponds to 16 gyllin (gl.) = 320 skinn (sk.). skinn is an ancient Faroese unit of measurement that has five different meanings. But here is a skinn 1/20 of a gyllin , which in turn is related to the word gallon .
In connection with the markatal, a mørk is not a measure of area , but a unit that determines how many inhabitants of a settlement could live on an agricultural area. The higher the markatal , the higher the possible population of a municipality. For the individual farmer , this also meant that certain rights and obligations were associated with his personal Markatal.
An exception is the island metropolis of Tórshavn , which, regardless of its markatal as a commercial and administrative center, always had a disproportionately large number of inhabitants.
Overall, the Faroe Islands with its 1,399 km² are now divided into 2,368 Mercury of different sizes . Historically there were 2,406 merkur , plus 12 gyllin and 5 skinn . The Markatal of the Faroe Islands is about 2,400 mk.
This figure shows that one mørk corresponds to about 0.6 km² . However, this is a pure average value with considerable deviations. On the island of Koltur one mørk corresponds to 0.14 km², while in Norðtoftir it is 1.98 km².

Marka Valley Villages
A markatalsbygd ("Markatals village") is the entire territory of a municipality (both Innmark and Außenmark ). Some places in the Faroe Islands are not counted as independent Markatalsdörfer because they are counted among the places mentioned below. For example, Tvøroyri is part of Trongisvágur , although Tvøroyri is larger as a place. There are historical reasons for this. Trongisvágur, on the other hand, is part of Tvøroyri municipality.
Note also that the abandoned villages Skálatoftir ( 1914 ) and Skarð ( 1919 ) appear in the table .
