Øravík is located on the south bank of Trongisvágsfjørður .

Øravík is an old village which, due to its location in the middle of the island, has always served as a place on Suðuroy. The actual thing place was Uppi millum Stovur , about 2 km west of the village.

The bay on which Øravík lies bears the same name, while the headland on the north side is called Gálgatangi . It is named after the gallows that once stood here and on which those condemned to death were hanged. The gorge "Gálgagjógv" (Gallows Gorge), which is well worth seeing, is located directly by the sea, and a sign on the road draws attention to it. In the event of an execution, a beam was placed across the ravine, from which the convicts were hung just above the sea.

The closest bay is Tjaldavík on the inside of the 7.5 hectare Tjaldavíkshólmur, one of the 11 spars of the Faroe Islands . Tents were set up here during the meeting of the “Suðuroyarting” vártings . The bay and the stile owe their name to these tents ( Faroese : tjald = tent ). The Tjaldavíkshólmur belongs administratively to the southern neighboring village of Hov . It provides enough food for ten sheep.
