The place

Froðba is at the far end of Trongisvágsfjørður on its north bank and the east coast of Suðuroy. Today it has grown together with the neighboring town of Tvøroyri. According to legend, Froðba is said to be the oldest settlement on the South Island . According to legend, a king named Fróði who was traveling from Denmark on his way to Ireland once settled here.

In Froðba there is also the Viðarlundin við Tvøroyrar kirkju park and there are also interesting columnar basalt formations . A small road leads to the 324 meter high Cape Frobiarnípa . From here you have a good view and you can also climb into a cave called Hol í Hellu . There are visible hard coal deposits on the way there . These are evidence of a forest that was covered by lava 50 million years ago .

Memorial stone for Poul F. Joensen in Froðba.

The poet Poul F. Joensen lived and worked here for more than half a century. At first he was a local village teacher but then preferred the life of the common man. In June 2007 a memorial stone ( Minnissteinur ) was erected in Froðba near his house . The stone itself comes from Sumba , the place where Poul F. was born and grew up.

A grandson of the poet, the social democratic politician Kristin Michelsen , still lives in Froðba today. He has been Mayor of Tvøroyri Municipality since 2001.
