biography

Early years

The bust of Poul F. Joensen, unveiled in Sumba in January 2007.

Poul was born on November 18, 1898 in the southernmost town of the Faroe Islands, Sumba, as the son of Daniel Jacob Joensen í Hørg and Anna Sofia, b. Langaard was born. Both parents came from the place. Poul was the oldest of nine siblings.

As a 14-year-old, like many of his friends, he first went to sea and got to Iceland on a fishing ship. When he then wanted to hire Robert Miller on the fishing ship , his parents were against it and instead sent him to the Faroese Teachers' School in Tórshavn . This decision of the parents should prove to be foresighted, because the Robert Miller later went down with man and mouse and there were no survivors.

Poul F. finished his training as a teacher in 1917 and initially went back to Sumba. From 1917 to 1919 he taught here for two years as a teacher at the Leiti school located between Lopra and Akrar . In 1919 he moved to Froðba, to the north of his home island Suðuroy , where he married Julia Mortensen in 1923 and taught there as a teacher until 1927. However, he could not cope with the life of a teacher and therefore preferred to work and write as a simple man on his small farm.

In 1924 he published his first collection of poems Gaman og álvara (Fun and Serious), which was published by Richard Long in the Varðin publishing house . After Yrkingar by Janus Djurhuus from 1914, it is the second collection of poems in the Faroese language.

In his satirical work, Joensen does not mince his words, which for many of his contemporaries goes a little too far . He wields his sword over all kinds of authorities and especially the bigotry of some clergymen. No cornerstone of society is safe from his ridicule. For his love poems, in turn, he experiences undivided appreciation in the country. He also does a great job in Faroese literature for the preservation of the old kvæði ( Faroese ballads ) in the 20th century by writing them down himself.

In 1963, Pól F. Joensen was awarded the Faroese Literature Prize for his life's work to date . Long after his death it is recited and set to music again and again, for example by Eivør Pálsdóttir on her debut album in 2000.
