history

Varðin is originally the name of a cultural association that was founded in 1912 and initially specialized as a book publisher for young people. For example, the first Faroese children's songs by Hans Andrias Djurhuus were published here . After 1919 it became a general literary association. His eponymous magazine ( Varðin. Føroyskt tíðarrit ) has been published since 1921 (Volume 77 was published in 2010 ). Almost every Faroese author has published there.

First editor of Vardin was Rikard Long from 1921 - 1931 and 1935 - 1943 , which made such a name for himself as a leading literary critic of the Faroe Islands. 1944 - 1951 was followed by Hans Andrias Djurhuus as editor. The internationally-known publisher was from 1961 - 1970 Heðin Brú (Jg. 34-39). Among other things, his Shakespeare translation of The Tempest appeared here .

Gunnar Hoydal and Steinbjørn B. Jacobsen were in charge from 1977 to 1981. After all, from 1987 to 2013, the magazine was run for 25 years by Poul Andreasen, whose successor was Agnar Artúvertin for a short time.

Dorit Hansen has been the head of the oldest Faroese literary magazine since the end of 2015. She is the first woman to do this job. In April 2016, the first issue of the 83rd edition of the literary magazine was published under her leadership, of which two issues a year will appear in the future. At the same time it announced that the digitization of all printed editions published since 1921 should be carried out.

Varðin appears in Tórshavn by the publisher of the same name ( Felagið Varðin ).
