Heðin Brú [ heːjɪn brʉu ], actually Hans Jacob Jacobsen or Hans Jákup í Stovuni (born August 17, 1901 in Skálavík , Faroe Islands ; † May 18, 1987 in Tórshavn ) was a Faroese writer .

Heðin Brú was the third Faroese novelist after Regin í Líð and Hans A. Djurhuus . It is considered the Faroese classic and is valued for its fresh and ironic style. His novel Feðgar á ferð (German title: Des poor man's honor , in the GDR: Ketil and the whales ; new translation 2015: Father and Son on the move ) is a book of the 20th century in the Faroe Islands.

Together with his colleagues , who were almost the same age, William Heinesen , Jørgen-Frantz Jacobsen and Christian Matras , people also speak of the “big four” of their generation in the Faroe Islands.

Live and act

Heðin Brú, like many of his compatriots, went to sea as a fisherman at a young age . After two seasons, he decided to train in agriculture in Denmark . Back in the Faroe Islands, he worked as an agricultural advisor. As such, he came around all over the country and came into contact with the simple village population, which was to have a decisive influence on his literary work.

In 1930 Heðin Brús first novel Lognbrá appeared , which tells of a boy growing up in a Faroese village. In 1935 the second part, Fastatøkur , comes out, where the now young man works as a fisherman on a sloop . Both books were published in 1946 in Danish translation under the title Høgni .

Feðgar á ferð , his best known work, was published in Faroese in 1940 , in Danish ( Fattigmandsære ) in 1962 , in German ( Des poor man's honor , translation of the Danish edition) in 1966 and in English in 1970 in the United States under the title The Old Man and his Sons . It was the first novel to be translated from Faroese into English. He tells of the change in rural society to a modern fishing nation and the resulting generation conflicts.

In 1963, Leikum fagurt was a satire on Faroese politics between the two world wars. Men livið lær (1970) is about a Faroese village around 1800, and Tað stóra takið from 1972 takes us to a Faroese village around 1900. In addition to these novels, Heðin Brú created three collections of novels and two Shakespeare translations ( Hamlet and the Storm ) and a considerable number of other translations of world literature into Faroese until his death . His six-volume Faroese fairy tale collection Ævintýr I - VI (with illustrations by Elinborg Lützen ) was published between 1959 and 1974 . A standard work.

Hans Jacob Jacobsen's son Bárður is one of the most important visual artists of our time in the Faroe Islands.
