Jørgen Fleischer

Jørgen "Juuluaraq" Pele Jens Fleischer (born June 28, 1924 in Ikerasak , † June 27, 2012 in Nuuk ) was a Greenlandic journalist and writer .

Life

Jørgen Fleischer was born in Ikerasak as the son of the Udsteds administrator Hans Johan Mathias Fleischer (1899–1968) and his wife Nathalie Augustine Pauline Fencker (1905–?). On February 20, 1955, he married the interpreter Margrethe Wassmann (1930–?).

He attended the Efterskole in Aasiaat from 1938 to 1940 and then Grønland's seminar in Nuuk , which he completed in 1944. He became seriously ill with tuberculosis in his youth but recovered. After completing his teacher training, he embarked on a journalistic career and from 1952 worked at Atuagagdliutit / Grønlandsposten , but moved to Denmark the following year , where he wrote in Vestkysten , another year later at Kristeligt Dagblad , worked for Danmarks Radio in 1955 and one year later at Dagens Nyheder . After another year he returned to Greenland in 1957 and worked at Grønlands Radio and again at Atuagagdliutit / Grønlandsposten. There he became editorial secretary in 1960 and editor-in-chief in 1962, which he remained until 1987. In 1958 he founded Sermitsiaq together with Peter Kreutzmann , which developed from a local Nuuk newspaper to a national newspaper. There he was also editor-in-chief.

Jørgen Fleischer sat on several boards of directors of associations and was chairman of the Association for Greenlandic Folk Art from 1963 to 1970. He was active as an author of books, articles, chronicles, biographies and novellas in newspapers. For his book Seredaaq allallu / Seredaaq og de andre he was nominated for the 2000 Nordic Council Literature Prize. He received the Greenland Christmas stamp award in 1987, the Greenland culture award in 2004 , was a knight of the Dannebrog Order , and since June 21, 1996 has been awarded the Nersornaat in gold. He died in Nuuk Hospital in 2012 the day before his 88th birthday.
