history
Skálavík was founded in the Faroe Islands in the Viking Age and was originally located directly on the beach. The place is mentioned in writing together with the neighboring town Húsavík for the first time around 1350 to 1400 in the so-called dog letter . Around 1600 the village was moved more into the valley. In the center of the village there is a large field around which the four districts are distributed. The Dalsgarður is one of the largest royal farms of the Faroe Islands.
The present stone church was consecrated in September 1891 after the old church, which had suffered severe damage in a storm the year before, was torn down and replaced by a new building. The boat harbor dates from the 1970s. At the beginning of every July there is a festival called Sandoyarstevna , a kind of mini- Ólavsøka .
At the end of January 2008, Skálavík was hit by a severe hurricane. The port, houses and boats were destroyed. The damage was so great that emergency aid was provided from Iceland.
In the village there is a hotel with parking spaces for mobile homes, a pension and a snack bar. There is a hiking trail to Húsavík in the south.
In August 2006 it was announced that Skálavík would get a leisure center for all of Sandoy. This project, initiated by the shipping couple Jacobsen from Skálavík, was opened as Depilin í Skálavík in 2011. In 2015 the Smyril Line took over the business and set up a hotel with 25 beds in the leisure center.
Personalities
Heðin Brú (1901–1987) and Kristian Osvald Viderø (1906–1988) are the most famous Skálavíkingar (as the locals are called). We owe Heðin Brú the first Faroese novel which was translated into many other languages; and Viderø the completion of the Faroese Bible translation.
