The villages of Dalur and Skarvanes belong to the municipality of Húsavík . Together with them, the municipality has about 130 inhabitants.

The place has existed in the Faroe Islands since the Viking Age . There are two old districts, but according to a legend the village used to be in a valley, Kvíggjagil , west of the current main settlement. Remnants of settlements as well as traces of a church and a cemetery can be found there.

There is also a legend according to which the village was wiped out by the Black Death in the 14th century and then rebuilt on the east bank of the stream. A very rich and able woman, called Hústrúin (the lady of the house), was at home in the village. According to legend, she and her husband rebuilt the village. The stone wall with which she fenced in the cemetery has been preserved, which also applies to the stone walls of the hay barn and the paved courtyard surrounding the houses. This is considered a testimony to their skills. This place is called Heimi á Garði .

The village church dates from 1863 . In the village there is an approx. 130-year-old former residential building with a sod roof that is now under monument protection: á Breyt . It is a museum and branch of the Faroese National Museum .

There is a relief by Tróndur Patursson on the pier . The wide sandy beach of Húsavík is one of the places approved for pilot whale fishing .
