Kvívík [ ˈkʰvʊivʊik ] ( Danish name : Kvivig , in older sources also Quivig ) is a place and a municipality on the Faroe Islands . The place is on the west coast of the main island Streymoy .

The excavation from the Viking Age in the town center.

history

Excavations of two long houses, one was a residential building and the other a stable, from 1941 onwards it was possible to prove that the place has been inhabited on the Faroe Islands since the Viking Age . Kvívík is one of the oldest places on the islands. Further excavations followed, where a whole range of objects were found that are now exhibited in the National Museum in Tórshavn . Spinning whorls , fishing gear, oil lamps and children's toys (horses and boats) show something about life during this time. Women's jewelry in the form of pearls was also found. Noteworthy is a women's shoe, the counterpart of which was found in Paris.

The stone church was consecrated on December 13, 1903 and replaced an old wooden church from 1838 , as it became too small in view of the increased population. Here on December 31, 1855, the newly appointed pastor VU Hammershaimb read from the Gospel - in Faroese , a scandal at the time, since Danish was the only church language. The poet Jógvan Dánialsson (Joen Danielsen), also known as Kvívíks-Jógvan or Kvívíkar Jógvan , learned to read the Faroese language from Kvívík from Hammershaimb . Among other things, around 1890 he wrote the now widely known 68-stanza Faroese ballad "Kópakvæðið". There is a legend about a farmer from Mikladalur who, on the thirteenth night , steals this skin and locks it away from a dancing and partying female seal who has transformed into a woman by shedding her fur. The female seal, transformed into a human being, who cannot go back into the sea without fur, is thereby bound to him and he takes her as a woman. In the end, however, the woman manages to get the fur back in an unguarded moment and she returns to the sea.
