Jóan Petur Gregoriussen (born June 1, 1845 in Kvívík , died November 15, 1901 ) was a Faroese seaman, carpenter, poet and writer. His name is often abbreviated to JP Gregoriussen , but in the Faroe Islands he is usually simply called Jóan Petur upp í Trøð .

Jóan Petur grew up in his native Kvívík, together with the two years older Joen Danielsen ( Kvívíks Jógvan ), who later also became a poet and wrote the famous ballad "Kópakvæðið". During this period, VU Hammershaimb was pastor in Kvívík between 1855 and 1862. He lent the two boys books containing texts in the written New Faroese language he had developed, and the two taught themselves to read the Faroese language.

Between 1867 and 1870 Jóan Petur worked as a seaman in the spring and autumn off Iceland. So it happened that he also attended church services in Iceland during this time and it struck him that these services were not held in Danish but in Icelandic . Through this experience he developed a heightened awareness of the conditions in the Faroe Islands, where at that time Danish and not Faroese was the church language.

In 1873 he married a young woman from his hometown. However, the marriage remained childless and his wife died in 1895.

When the language and culture association Føringafelag came into being after the famous Christmas meeting of 1888 , IPG, as it is also abbreviated, became a very committed member. This union had sat among other objectives, the Faroese language lasting from their centuries- long sleep to wake.

The contact with Hammershaimb never broke off, not even when he later lived in Denmark. With his support, Jóan Petur also began translating pieces from the Old and New Testament into Faroese around 1890 .

One of the most famous poems by Jóan Petur Gregoriussen is " Brúðarvísan ", which was written shortly before his death and is often sung at weddings in the Faroe Islands.

The Faroese librarian MA Jacobsen brought out a poetry collection in 1928 which contained most of the poems by JP Gregoriussen.
