Jákup Pauli Gregoriussen (born April 24, 1932 in Tórshavn / Faroe Islands ) is the leading architect in the Faroe Islands. At the same time he is a graphic artist and author on the Faroese church buildings .

Life

One of Gregoriussen's Faroese postage stamps (1992): The old wooden church in Gøta dates from 1833 and was considered the oldest of its kind in the country on its 100th anniversary. But the residents of Hvalvík knew better, because such a building was built there as early as 1829. In his book Gomlu trækirkjurnar (1995) these and other stories are told

Jákup Pauli was born in 1932 as the son of the fashion designer Liffa Gregoriussen (née Arge) and the seafarer Magnus Gregoriussen from Kvívík . He was trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen .

One of his most famous buildings is the Listaskáli art gallery (1970) and its extension to the National Art Museum in 1993. As a graphic artist, he not only designed a series of postage stamps for Postverk Føroya , but also illustrated books. His main subjects are city and village views, not only of the Faroe Islands, but also of his travels, etc. a. Russia , Poland , Rome and Egypt .

For his four-volume work on the churches of the Faroe Islands (1995-1999) he received the Faroese Literature Prize ( MA Jacobsens Heiðursløn ) in 1998 . It is his bibliophile masterpiece, luxuriously illustrated and at the same time a book about the church history of the Faroe Islands and the history of the Faroe Islands from a local perspective. Gregoriussen is also an authoritative advisor on the restoration of Faroese churches.
