The Subaru Justy was a small car offered by the Japanese automaker Subaru between the summer of 1984 and mid-2011 . A special feature of the Justy was that it had all-wheel drive . Only the last version offered only front-wheel drive .
Subaru has been offering a Justy again in Japan since 2016 . This model is identical to the Toyota Tank and the Daihatsu Thor . However, due to its height of 1.74 m, this vehicle is assigned to the minivans .

General
While the first generation was a completely in-house development by Subaru, cooperation with other manufacturers was sought afterwards to reduce costs. For the second and third generation, a cooperation with Suzuki was used and the corresponding models were jointly produced at Magyar Suzuki Zrt. in Esztergom . Terminated after General Motors' stake in Fuji Heavy Industries ended - General Motors was also involved in Suzuki. Because of Toyota's new stake in Fuji Heavy Industries, a collaboration with the Toyota subsidiary Daihatsu took place .
The Justy models were not powered by boxer engines , as is typical of Subaru , but by in- line engines.
From 2011 to 2014 the Subaru Trezia was built based on a Toyota model.

The first generation of the Justy, introduced in the summer of 1984, was based on the smaller Subaru Rex 2 from 1981, but was wider and longer.
The models of the first generation initially received a long-stroke 1.0 l three-cylinder with a balance shaft, which was a further development of the parallel twin engine from the Subaru Rex . This motor has an output of 40 kW. The stroke was later extended with a new crankshaft, and a 1.2 l engine with 50 kW (68 hp) was also available. This engine is also used in the Subaru Libero .
The Justy I J1000 and Justy J1200 were only available in Germany with switchable all-wheel drive , while in Austria, for example , they could be purchased with front - wheel drive under the name "Super-Justy 1.0S 2WD" . As the Subaru Tutto , the Justy was built as a notchback version in cooperation with a Taiwanese company exclusively for the local market. In 1987 the Justy received an optional CVT automatic transmission instead of the previously available 3-speed automatic transmission.
In mid-1989, the three- and five-door body was also visually revised, while the interior remained untouched except for small details. In the same year, the Justy was also winner of the Car Environment list of the VCD .
From 1991, the fuel-efficient 1.2 l carburetor engine was equipped with multi-point injection and, with its long-stroke piston arrangement, achieved its maximum torque at 2,800 rpm. The exhaust system was also equipped with a regulated first-generation 3-way catalytic converter and meets the Euro 1 emissions standard , and also the Euro 2 standard through retrofitting systems.
The Justy I has a manually switchable all-wheel drive without a center differential . The rear axle differential has no locking effect . The rear axle can also be driven by a transfer case, which is controlled via a vacuum membrane. When changing between front and all-wheel drive, it is not necessary to operate the clutch. The Justy I had independent suspension at the front, MacPherson struts and wishbones at the front, and a trailing arm axle with separately installed shock absorbers and springs at the rear. The ground clearance is 170 mm.
In some European countries the Justy I was sold under the name Subaru Trendy . In Taiwan, the Justy I was also available as a more powerful sedan under the name Subaru Tutto . The Justy was sometimes also sold as a J10 or J12 (depending on the engine variant). In Europe, the three-door Justy I was in small numbers as station wagons available. The rear windows were covered on this model and the trunk and the side interior trim were flattened.

In autumn 1995 the first generation was replaced by a completely new model: The Justy II, available as a three- and five-door model, was based on the Suzuki Swift (model MA), was built in cooperation with Magyar Suzuki in Hungary until the end of 2003 and, in contrast to permanent all-wheel drive to its predecessor.
Since the model change, the Justy models have been powered by four-cylinder engines that were produced by Suzuki and also used in the Suzuki Swift . Starting with the Justy II, the Subaru Justy was only offered in Europe after the end of production of the first generation.
The Justy II was visually redesigned in autumn 1997. The Geo Metro , the Pontiac Firefly , the Chevrolet Sprint and the Holden Barina from GM Australia , which are offered in North America, are also based on the Suzuki Swift , making it a model that is marketed globally. It has permanent all-wheel drive. The rear axle is driven via a viscous coupling, which only transmits torque to the rear axle if there is a speed difference between the axles due to slip on the front axle.

From autumn 2003 the G3X Justy was sold. The G3X Justy was manufactured parallel to the second generation of the Suzuki Ignis (model Mk. II) and is almost identical to it in technical terms. The Subaru Justy was no longer considered a small car, but belonged to the Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) segment and was the third representative of this type from Subaru alongside the Subaru Forester and Subaru Outback . In the tradition of other Subaru models, all G3X Justy with gasoline engines in Germany were equipped with permanent all-wheel drive. Models with the common rail diesel engine from Fiat / GM only had front-wheel drive.

The fourth generation made its debut at the IAA in autumn 2007.
The new Justy was an OEM version of the Daihatsu Sirion and was manufactured by Toyota subsidiary Daihatsu for Fuji Heavy Industries . The differences to the Daihatsu Sirion were only cosmetic, both cars were largely identical to each other. However, in contrast to the Daihatsu Sirion, which is also optionally available with all-wheel drive, the Justy was only sold with front-wheel drive in Germany . The Subaru Justy was available in two trim levels, Trend and Active. The basic price for the Justy was € 12,490. The technology from Daihatsu and again a three-cylinder in-line engine with 1.0 l displacement was used. This engine developed 51 kW (70 hp) at 6,000 rpm and achieved a maximum torque of 94 Nm at 3,600 rpm. It complied with the Euro 4 emissions standard.
A special version with all-wheel drive was also offered on the Swiss market. In contrast to its predecessor (type G3X ), the new Justy was significantly smaller and no longer suitable for off-road use, so that it can again be regarded as a conventional small car. The model was only available as a five-door.
The Justy IV has independent wheel suspension on MacPherson struts and wishbones at the front and a twist beam axle at the rear. The ground clearance is only 150 mm.
In mid-2011 the Justy was replaced by the Subaru Trezia .

Awards
In January 2010, the ADAC awarded the Subaru Justy the Yellow Angel in the quality category. This award was based on a survey of members of the ADAC and the “excellent results in the ADAC breakdown statistics”.
