The Subaru 1000 is a passenger car that Fuji Heavy Industries produced from 1966. It was the first Subaru with front-wheel drive and a boxer engine . According to the Japanese classification, it was a "small car". Until then, Subaru models such as the Subaru 360 and the Subaru Sambar had rear-engined , rear-wheel drive and were kei cars .

In 1960, the Subaru management decided to develop a successor to the Subaru 1500 presented as a prototype with the code name "A-5". Subaru wanted to offer a car that could comfortably move four passengers and would be an alternative to the contemporary Toyota Publica , Datsun 110/210 or Mitsubishi Colt 600 for buyers . In order to have a serious chance in the market, one had to be better than the competition and therefore decided to reduce the engine noise by moving the engine to the front, although originally the drive of the rear wheels was to be retained and a cardan shaft was to be installed. All four wheels were hung individually. The only other Japanese company at the time that used an air-cooled boxer engine was Toyota with the Publica model.

In 1963 Subaru revised its prototype for the new project "A-4" with a smaller 923 cc engine and front-wheel drive. This design was eventually introduced as the Subaru 1000. The engine was water-cooled instead of air for quiet operation. The Subaru 1000 was formally unveiled on October 21, 1965 at the Hilton Hotel (now Hotel Tokyu Capitol) in Tokyo . From May 14, 1966 it was available to buyers. The two-door coupe followed in February 1967 and a four-door station wagon in September 1967. The Subaru 1000 had a then unique water-cooled, four-cylinder boxer engine with overhead valves. Subaru engineers examined engines from Porsche , Volkswagen and the Chevrolet Corvair and developed the combination with front-wheel drive. By March 1969, Subaru had sold more than 4,000 units in the home market, which competed with the Toyota Corolla KE10 (introduced in 1966) and the Nissan Sunny B10 series. From 1969 the Subaru 1000 was replaced by the Subaru FF-1 .
