The Subaru R1 was introduced by the Japanese automaker January 4, 2005. It was developed according to Japanese specifications for tax-privileged small cars ( Kei-Car ). The R1 is a two-door version of the Subaru R2 , but with a shorter wheelbase and body. The R1 was available with a 658 cc Subaru EN engine, which was available in three versions: the EN07U with one overhead camshaft and 34 kW (46 hp), as the R EN07D with two overhead camshafts and 40 kW (54 hp) ) and as STi with an EN07X engine with compressor and intercooler and 47 kW (64 PS). All R1 were available with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) and optionally with all-wheel drive .
In advertising, Subaru tried to connect the R1 to the Subaru 360 , the first mass-produced vehicle from Subaru Automobile.
The R1 is also the basis for several experimental vehicles; the battery electric vehicle Subaru R1e with limited production for selected customers from the industry in Japan, and the sports car Prodrive P2 .
