The first series of the Opel Zafira was introduced in April 1999.

With it, the then new seat concept Flex7, developed on behalf of Opel by Porsche in Weissach, was introduced with space for up to seven people, in which the two rear seats (in the third row of seats) can each be completely lowered into the vehicle floor and the middle one (three-seat) row of seats can be folded up and pushed forward. This enables a high degree of variability, whereby a conversion from the full seven-seater seating to an up to 1.80 m long and up to 1.11 m wide flat loading area is possible without having to remove the seats - as was common with the competing models at the time .

As a result of its market success, the Zafira was seen as the savior of the old Opel location in Bochum , because without the Zafira, large parts of Bochum's production would have been shut down in the early 2000s.

In autumn 2001, Opel presented the Zafira CNG, the first purely natural gas car, and sales began in spring 2002.

The Zafira was also offered as a sporty model variant OPC ("Opel Performance Center") with a 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. This has an output of 141 kW (from autumn 2002: 147 kW) and a torque of 250 Nm. For comparison: the 2.0 DTI (Diesel Turbo Direct Injection) with the same displacement achieves a torque of 230 Nm.

Facelift

In February 2003 the look and parts of the equipment were modified as part of the facelift . The radiator grille was given a wide, chrome-plated center strut and the rear lights were given a red and white cover, the door handles and the decorative strips all around were now painted in the same color as the car and the rubber edging of the rear window was omitted.

Since then, the bench in the second row of seats could be folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio and had standard Isofix child seat brackets on the outer seats, as well as three full seat belts (previously the middle seat was only equipped with a lap belt). In addition, the bench seat can now be tilted back one more step, which also required adjustments to the luggage compartment cover and the partition net.

Production of the first generation of Zafira in Bochum ended on May 25, 2005.

Abroad

In some countries in South America and Asia , the Zafira A was sold as the Chevrolet Zafira .

From 2001 to 2005 the Zafira A was sold as Subaru Traviq in Japan . In 2001 a prototype of the Traviq with all-wheel drive was also presented, but it did not go into series production. In Southeast Asia the model is known as the Chevrolet Nabira and was available there until 2007.

The test vehicle GM HydroGen3 is based on the Opel Zafira A and was manufactured between 2001 and 2006. This is a hydrogen- powered vehicle equipped with fuel cells and electric motors .

On July 9, 2005, the second generation of the Zafira (Zafira B) was introduced, which, like the predecessor model and the Astra G and Astra H models, is still based on the Delta platform from General Motors, but has been comprehensively modernized. While the Flex7 seating system was adopted almost unchanged from the previous model, there were profound changes in the ergonomics of the user, the electronics (conversion to CAN bus ) and the range of engines. All diesel engines were replaced by more modern engines and the gasoline engines were technically modernized.

The 1.9 CDTI engines were developed jointly by GM Powertrain and Fiat and are also used in many other models from the Opel, Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Saab and Cadillac BLS brands . After the termination of the joint venture, General Motors and Fiat will share the intellectual rights to this engine; It was still manufactured by Fiat due to long-term supply contracts.

The second generation of the Zafira was also offered until summer 2010 in a more powerful OPC variant with now 177 kW (240 PS), which was the fastest compact van in the world with a top speed of 231 km / h (as of March 2010). In September 2005, the natural gas-powered Zafira 1.6 CNG was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main and could be ordered from the beginning of November 2005. From spring 2009, this engine was replaced by the much more powerful 1.6 CNG Turbo presented at the international Italian motor show Motor Show di Bologna on December 5, 2008.

In Chile and Mexico the second generation of the Zafira was offered as the Chevrolet Zafira .

Facelift

The revised version of the Zafira was presented for the first time at the Bologna Motor Show in December 2007. From February 2008 it was offered by dealers.

There were changes to both the exterior and the interior:

At the front, the radiator grille was fitted with chrome-plated slats and the bumper was redesigned. The headlight housings have been kept chrome in some equipment lines since then (except for headlights with xenon technology) and the design of the rear lights has also been revised. On vehicles with roof rails, the “retaining jaws” in the retaining system for luggage racks have been replaced by “retaining holes” so that the carrier systems are no longer compatible with models before 2008 . New colors for the center console and decorative strips are intended to enhance the interior.

With the revision, the 1.6 Twinport engine (Z16XEP) with 77 kW (105 PS) and the 1.9 CDTI engine (Z19DTL) with 74 kW (100 PS) were replaced by more powerful versions (Z16XER and A17DTJ), the are also more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly. The even more economical ecoflex motors were also introduced.

After the successor appeared, the model continued to be produced under the name Zafira Family (in Austria Zafira Classic ) until the end of 2014 . The Zafira Family was offered with two gasoline engines: a 1.6-liter engine with 85 kW (later replaced by one with 1.8 liters and 88 kW) and a 1.8-liter engine with 103 kW. In addition, two 1.7 liter diesel engines with 81 kW and 92 kW and a 1.6 liter turbo natural gas engine with 110 kW were offered.

The third generation of the Opel Zafira was presented at the IAA 2011 in Frankfurt, the market launch took place on January 14, 2012. Until the facelift in the summer of 2016 officially known as the “Zafira Tourer”, the Tourer suffix has been removed with the revision.

The Buick GL6 based on the Zafira C made its debut at the Chengdu Auto Show in August 2017 . This is built in China by SAIC General Motors and has been sold below the Buick GL8 since October 2017 . A 1.3-liter four-cylinder petrol engine (120 kW / 163 PS) is responsible for the drive.

The Italian design and body construction company Vercarmodel Saro was responsible for developing the model .

The Flex7 seating system, which has been revised again, is also available for the Zafira Tourer. In contrast to the first two generations, in which the Flex7 seating system was still part of the basic equipment, the Zafira Tourer in the simpler equipment variants is only delivered as standard as a five-seater.

In addition to numerous additional assistance systems, such as blind spot warning systems , traffic sign recognition , adaptive cruise control (maintains the distance to the vehicle in front), lane assistant and parking assistant , there is also an (optional) panoramic windshield, as it is already on the Opel Astra H GTC ( Option) and was or is being offered for the Citroën C4 Picasso .

production

From 2011 to December 2014, the Zafira Tourer was manufactured at Opel in Bochum. Due to the closure of the plant in Bochum, production was relocated to the main Opel plant in Rüsselsheim , where the Zafira Tourer was also manufactured until it was discontinued.

Production of the Zafira Tourer ceased in July 2019. It has been replaced by the larger Van Zafira Life . The reason for the hiring is that Opel (and Vauxhall) was bought by PSA in 2017 and has to switch its products from GM to PSA platforms.

Exhaust scandal

In the course of the exhaust gas scandal in the automotive industry, which has been ongoing since September 2015, investigations by Spiegel , Deutsche Umwelthilfe and the ARD magazine Monitor in May 2016 showed that the current Zafira model with a diesel engine may have illegal shutdown devices installed that reduce or reduce exhaust gas aftertreatment in road operations. turns off completely. Opel admitted that the exhaust gas purification of the model in question only works in a narrow temperature window "in the range of 20 to 30 degrees fully", but rejected the installation of a shutdown device. The investigations were able to prove that in addition to the temperature window specified by Opel, further restrictions such as a speed of over 2400 rpm, a driving speed of over 140 km / h or an ambient air pressure of less than 915 hectopascal, which occurs from an altitude of 850 meters, apply a reduction in exhaust aftertreatment. For the type approval of the successor model, the Federal Ministry of Transport required that Opel remove the cut-off devices from the engine control , which Opel assured. The first follow-up tests by Deutsche Umwelthilfe with a vehicle provided by Opel with a new engine management system showed an improvement in exhaust emissions, which was reduced from a factor of 5.2 to 1.2 above the limit value, but still exceeds it. From the perspective of the ministry, the models that have already been sold should also be subject to improvement.

Engines

Those car variants that have engines with the designation EcoFLEX (with the exception of the LPG- powered 1.4 LPG ecoFLEX engine and the natural gas-powered 1.6 CNG ecoFLEX engine) have a start-stop system. They have a radiator grille with actively controlled air inlet flaps, low-friction tires and use an optimized gear ratio and brake energy recovery, which should reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions. Except for the variant with the basic engine ( 1.8 ), which only comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the 2.0 CDTI engine (96 kW / 130 PS) and 1.6 SIDI turbo engine (125 kW / 170 PS), which only come with a Six-stage automatic converter transmissions are available, all variants with other engines are equipped with 6-speed transmissions as standard. For the 1.4 turbo engine (103 kW / 140 PS) and the 2.0 CDTI engine (125 kW / 170 PS) an automatic converter transmission with six gear stages is available as an option.
