Opel Diesel GT

The Opel Diesel World Record GT was a test vehicle from Adam Opel AG .

The vehicle with an aerodynamic body was based on the Opel GT and was powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine with a displacement of 2068 cm, an exhaust gas turbocharger and an output of 70 kW (95 hp), like the one in the Opel (with 60 hp as standard) Record was used.

The turbocharger was supplied by Eberspächer , the maximum power of the engine was 4400 rpm, the compression was 22: 1. The pistons had three piston rings instead of two like the later production version, the oil pan was enlarged, there was an additional oil cooler, and the cylinder head gasket, which had been developed by the automotive supplier Reinz, was modified. The combustion chambers were designed with swirl chambers , the distributor injection pump came from Bosch. The four-speed transmission of the car came from the Opel Commodore , the rear axle ratio was 2,667: 1. The sizes of Michelin XAS steel belted tires were 145 HR 15 in the front and 165 HR 15 in the rear. For this world record attempt, Mobil Oil developed a new motor oil, which was also offered in stores a little later.

During test drives in the Opel test center in Dudenhofen , the vehicle reached a top speed of 197.498 km / h. From June 1st to 3rd, 1972 (the record attempt lasted 52 hours), two world records and 18 international records were set for diesel vehicles: over 10, 100, 500, 1000 and 10,000 km, with an average speed of 190.88 km / h .

In 2003, Opel built a similar record-breaking vehicle with the Eco Speedster .
