Dieudonné-Hubert Sarton (born November 3, 1748 in Liège ; † October 18, 1828 there ; commonly called Hubert ) was a Belgian watchmaker .

Life and watchmaking achievement

As a child, Sarton showed a great affinity for mechanics and an interest in science. His uncle and godfather Dieudonné Sarton trained him as a watchmaker around 1762. In 1768 Sarton went to Paris to complete his training and perfect his watchmaking skills. There he also worked for Pierre II. Leroy , the eldest son of Julien Leroy , court clockmaker of King Louis XVI. After becoming a master watchmaker, he returned to Liège around 1772 and settled there permanently.

Sarton was the court watchmaker of Duke Karl Alexander von Lothringen , governor of the Netherlands, and worked for many years in the service of Prince-Bishop of Liège Franz Karl von Velbrück , who was his patron and patron. In 1799 he commissioned Sarton to found the Société Libre d'Emulation in Liège.

Sarton wrote a number of memoranda and also dealt with the construction of machines for coal mining, as well as windmills and hydraulic machines for draining Dutch polders.

He had eight children, three of whom also learned the watchmaking trade.
