Model history

General

The Vectra A was launched on October 14, 1988 as a notchback in the GL, GLS and CD equipment.

In January 1989 the notchback with all-wheel drive followed and in March 1989 the hatchback in the GL and GT equipment. The all-wheel drive was developed together with the Austrian company Steyr-Daimler-Puch and was a completely new combination of viscous coupling and multi-plate separation clutch, via which the power from the transmission was conducted to the rear axle. From September 1991 the CD Diamant and 4x4 Diamant equipment were added.

Facelift

In September 1992 the Vectra A received a facelift with a redesigned front and rear. The distinguishing features of the new model are the modified radiator grille with integrated Opel Blitz, bumpers painted in the vehicle color, slightly curved headlight glasses, the newly designed taillights and the continuous handle strip on the tailgate.

Every Vectra was now equipped with an anti-lock braking system, power steering and five-speed gearbox as standard. The standard safety equipment was the facelift to side impact protection with double steel tube reinforcements in all doors, reinforced sill plates extended and roof rails.

From February 1993 the driver airbag and from September 1993 also the front passenger airbag were available as options. Both airbags were finally part of the standard equipment from September 1994.

Until the discontinuation of the Vectra A in July 1995, there were constant changes in the possible combinations between body shape and equipment, which also resulted in some very rare models:

  • As the successor to the Vectra 2000, the Vectra GT 16V with a revised 110 kW 16-valve engine was offered from September 1992 to February 1994. The Vectra GT or GT 16V, only available as a hatchback, was also offered as a notchback for a short time from September 1993 to February 1994.
  • the Vectra Eco with the new 52 kW (71 hp) 1.6i engine was only offered in September and October 1993.
  • from September 1993 to February 1994 the V6 Exclusive was offered for a short time.
  • In September 1993 the 4x4 equipment was discontinued, which meant that only the Vectra GL 2.0i all-wheel drive could be ordered as an option until the all-wheel drive option was discontinued in February 1994 without replacement.
  • from March 1994 the Vectra CDX, which was produced around 70,000 times, was introduced.

Special models

Vectra 2000

The Vectra 2000 or Vectra 2000 4 × 4 was the top model from September 1989 to July 1992. The Vectra 2000, only available as a notchback, was only available with a 110 kW 16-valve engine and was produced around 25,000 times before it was discontinued .

Vectra Turbo 4 × 4

The Vectra Turbo 4 × 4 was initially only offered as a top model for other European countries from September 1992. Since Opel had many all-wheel drive customers in Switzerland and Austria, the all-wheel drive Vectra was available there in conjunction with the 150 kW (204 hp) 16-valve turbo engine. From September 1993 the Vectra Turbo 4 × 4 was also offered as a top model in Germany, but was generally discontinued in July 1994. From September 1992 to July 1994 only 2252 Vectra Turbo 4 × 4 were sold, mainly to Great Britain, Austria, Switzerland and Germany.

Vectra V6

The Vectra V6 notchback with the 125 kW (170 hp) 2.5-liter V6 engine was offered as the new top model in Germany from the facelift. From March 1993 initially only available with automatic transmission, the V6 was also available with manual transmission from June 1993. Since March 1994 the Vectra V6 was offered as a notchback and hatchback. With the elimination of the Vectra Turbo 4 × 4, the Vectra V6 was the only top model from September 1994.

Expression (Switzerland only)

The Vectra Expression with the 2.0i engine with 85 kW (115 PS) has the so-called "Expression Safe-Tec" additional equipment and was only offered in Switzerland. Additional equipment compared to the basic GL model includes the driver's airbag, ABS, special wheel covers, electric window lifters at the front, interior fittings in "Expression Safe-Tec" design, electrically heated and adjustable exterior mirrors, exterior mirror housings painted in body color and a surrounding decorative strip in the "Expression Safe-Tec “design.

Existence in Germany

The inventory of Opel Vectra A is listed according to manufacturer (HSN) and type code numbers (TSN) in Germany according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority . Types with less than 100 vehicles are not shown. Until 2007, the inventory included the number of vehicles registered as well as the number of temporary shutdowns. Since 2008, the inventory has only included "flowing traffic" including the seasonal license plates.
