The Opel 18/40 PS was an automobile of the upper class , which the Adam Opel KG 1912-1914 as successor to the model 21/45 PS built.

History and technology

The 18/40 PS replaced the larger 21/45 PS as well as the smaller and cheaper 16/35 PS model .

Like its predecessor, the 18/40 hp had a side-controlled four - cylinder block engine , but with a displacement of just 4676 cm³ (bore × stroke = 105 mm × 135 mm). The power, however, was 45 hp (33 kW) at 1500 rpm. stayed the same. The engine was water-cooled; a centrifugal pump provided the cooling water. The engine power was passed on to the rear axle via a leather cone clutch, a manual four-speed gearbox and a cardan shaft . The top speed of 80 km / h also remained unchanged.

The two rigid axles were suspended from three-quarter elliptical (predecessor: semi-elliptical) longitudinal leaf springs on the sheet steel U-profile frame. The service brake was an internal shoe brake that acted on the cardan shaft (predecessor: output shaft of the transmission). The handbrake was designed as a drum brake on the rear wheels.

The car was available as a four-seater double phaeton , a torpedo , a four-door Pullman limousine or a landaulet . The coupé was no longer issued. The cheapest variant (double phaeton) cost 12,750 RM.

Production of the 18/40 hp was stopped in early 1914. The successor was the slightly larger 20/45 PS .
