The Opel 21/55 PS was an automobile of the upper class of Adam Opel KG and the first Opel vehicle with six-cylinder engine . As the successor to the 25/55 hp model , it was built from 1919 to 1924.

Technology and history

After the First World War , Opel again launched a luxury car after the previous model had been discontinued due to the war in 1916.

The new car was available with two different bodies: there was a classic Pullman limousine and a large touring car with six or seven seats. The superstructures reached a length of up to 5300 mm.

The 21/55 hp had a six-cylinder in- line engine . This put the old technology of block engines aside, in which two cylinders were always cast into one block. The cubic capacity of 5646 cm³ was considerably smaller than that of the predecessor with a 6.5-liter engine. However, the power increased to 60 hp (44 kW) at 1500 rpm. As with the previous model, the valves were side-controlled .

The engine power was transmitted to the rear axle via a leather cone clutch, a manual four-speed gearbox and a cardan shaft with two joints.

A steel ladder frame served as the chassis . The two rigid axles were suspended from semi-elliptical longitudinal leaf springs. The band brake acted on the transmission output shaft and thus only on the rear wheels.

The maximum speed is given as 85 km / h.

Production of the 21/55 hp ended at the end of 1924. The successor Opel Regent came onto the market more than three years later in 1928.
