The Opel OSV 40 was a vehicle study by Adam Opel AG , with which the safety in passenger cars should be improved. The developers implemented several ideas on and in the vehicle. The designers named the test vehicle according to the concept "Opel Security Vehicle", OSV for short. The number 40 meant that the car was particularly well designed for a crash at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.

The development of the Opel OSV 40

In the early 1970s, vehicle occupant protection was not well developed. Features like airbag , ESP and ABS were far from standard. New safety regulations in the USA caused manufacturers to rethink. And so a prototype was developed for the second ESV ( Internal Technical Conference on the Enhanced Safety of Vehicles ) in which some new safety concepts were tested. The basis for the OSV was the platform of the Opel Kadett C , which had been manufactured since 1973. However, the body was fundamentally changed for the purpose of increased safety.

The developments at OSV 40

The concept of the OSV 40 essentially consisted of the development of high-performance crumple zones . For this purpose, many cavities as well as side members and bumpers were filled with polyurethane . In addition, there were front soft plastic - bumpers that could abfederten an impact of up to 8 km / h and can withstand without damage. In the interior, too, sheet metal surfaces and the dashboard were covered with foam, which was supposed to protect the occupants in the event of an impact. The headrests of the front seats were connected to the roof, which added stability and replaced a roll cage . The seat belts on the front seats were fitted with pretensioners . The front seat backs were wide and pulled forward to avoid the driver and front passenger colliding in a side collision. A new lighting concept was used for this purpose. The rear brake lights were raised to increase visibility from a distance.

Aftermath of OSV 40

The OSV performed above average in the crash test . In the event of an impact at 65 km / h, all four doors could still be opened. Some features of the Opel OSV 40 made it into series production in a modified form, including the belt tensioners and the consistent further development of the crumple zone . However, the plastic foam in the interior has been replaced by the airbag. In terms of design, the OSV was recycled by Opel sister company Vauxhall . They used the front and the sidelines in their design of the Chevette , which was mass- produced in Great Britain . A prototype of the Opel OSV 40 is in the company's collection in Rüsselsheim am Main today .
