The Sunward was a cruise ship put into service in 1966 that could also be used as a ferry . After the ship spent its first years of service with Norwegian Cruise Line , it changed name and operator several times. It was retired in 2002 and scrapped in Bangladesh in 2004 .

history

The Sunward was built on July 29, 1965 under construction number 455 in the Bergens Mekaniske Verksted in Bergen and launched on March 24, 1966. After the takeover by Klosters Sunward Ferries on June 20, 1966, the ship was put into service on June 25 as a combined ferry and cruise ship on the route from Southampton via Vigo , Lisbon and Gibraltar .

After only a few months in the drive was Sunward in the Nov. 5, 1966 Oslo launched . In December the ship went to Norwegian Cruise Line, which used it for cruises to the Caribbean from Miami for the next six years .

In November 1972, bought Compangnie Générale Transméditerranéenne based in Marseille , the Sunward and baptized them in April 1973 in Ile de Beauté order. From then on, the ship was used as a ferry off the coast of France before it was sold as Grand Flotel to Eastern Gulf Inc. in 1977 and used as a hotel ship in Sharjah .

From 1978 onwards, the Grand Flotel operated under the name Saudi Moon I between Suez , Aqaba and Jeddah for the next ten years . In 1988 it was modernized in Singapore and from then on used as Ocean Spirit for cruises from New Orleans to Mexico . In 1990 the ship went to SeaEscape as a Scandinavian Song and was henceforth used again in the Caribbean.

After three years in service for SeaEscape, the Scandinavian Song was sold as Santiago de Cuba to Cuba in November 1993 to be used for cruises. The project failed, however, which is why the ship was launched in February 1994. In the same year it found a new buyer, Empress Cruises , who used it as The Empress for cruises between Port Klang and Penang .

On March 13, 2002, The Empress was retired after 36 years of service and launched in Singapore. In September 2009 the ship went to a demolition yard in Chittagong , where it arrived for scrapping in April under the transfer name Empress .
