The Opel GT was presented as the successor to the Opel Speedster at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2006 and was voted Convertible of the Year 2007 by an independent jury of experts .

The roadster came onto the European market in spring 2007 . It was advertised with the slogans "The legend is back" and "GT'aime", a reference to the French "je t'aime" (German: "I love you").

The GT is based on the Kappa platform (front engine, rear drive) of the Opel parent company GM , on which the almost identical Saturn Sky , Pontiac Solstice and Daewoo G2X are based. These vehicles and the Opel GT were built in Wilmington , Delaware . The then Design Director for General Motors Franz von Holzhausen was responsible for the design of the Kappa platform .

technology

The model has a 9.2: 1 compressed 2.0-liter turbo Ecotec four-cylinder engine (Z20NHH, LNF) with an output of 194 kW (264 hp) at 5300 rpm, direct petrol injection , double variable camshaft adjustment and double-flow turbocharger with charge air cooling . The engine is derived from the 2.2-liter engine already known from the Astra , Vectra and Signum . Later the modified engine with the engine codes A20NHT and A20NFT was also used in the Opel Insignia with an output of 162 to 184 kW (350 and 400 Nm) and in the Astra J OPC with 206 kW and 400 Nm.

The maximum torque of 353  Nm is available at 2000 rpm, according to the factory specifications, the GT accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.7 seconds, the top speed is 229 km / h with an average consumption of 9.2 l / 100 km . The specification of 5.7 seconds to 100 km / h was extrapolated based on the American value (0-60  mph ); However, 60 mph is only 96 km / h and not 100 km / h. According to a measurement by Autobild Sportscars , the Opel GT accelerates to 100 km / h in 6.3 seconds.

The Opel GT is 4100 mm long, 1813 mm wide, 1274 mm high and has a 2415 mm wheelbase. On the other hand, the curb weight of up to 1406 kg is significantly higher than that of the Speedster Turbo (930 kg curb weight). The standard equipment includes a manual soft top, manual air conditioning , a manual 5-speed gearbox and a limited slip differential with up to 70% locking.

The wheels are suspended from double wishbones made of aluminum on both axles. The front-rear weight distribution is almost optimally balanced at 51: 49.

The driving behavior is monitored by the four-stage electronic stability program ( ESP ), at Opel: ESC (Electronic Stability Control) in which the following modes can be selected:

  • Normal, without display (ESP on, traction control , at Opel: traction control on),
  • ASR off (ESP on, traction control off),
  • Sports mode (ESP intervenes later and allows larger drift angles, traction control off) and
  • ESC off / ASR off (ESP off, traction control off).

Another feature of the chassis is a torsion support between the transmission and the rear axle, which absorbs load change reactions when accelerating and braking.

The soft top can only be operated manually. After electrically unlocking the fins and the top cover, the roof can be unlocked and folded up manually. To stow the vehicle, the driver has to leave the vehicle, manually open the unlocked top cover, lower the roof in the roof space and close the top cover again. When closing, two fins must also be folded down manually and locked in openings in the top cover.

There is no trunk worth mentioning, so the vehicle is designed solely for driving pleasure and in no way for everyday use. This can also be seen in idiosyncratic details, such as the clamshell engine hood, which looks very sporty, but its negligent construction carries the risk of damaging open doors and the hood itself when closing. The only countermeasure is an inconspicuous warning sticker with English and French writing on the fenders as well as the corresponding note in the operating instructions. Lifting the vehicle free using a platform or trolley jack also carries the risk of damaging the rocker panel. Opel itself offered appropriate protective pads as loose accessories.

The Opel GT was available in the colors onyx black, night blue, solar yellow, metal gray, damask silver, granite gray, eifel blue and Victoria red.

The price in the basic equipment was:

  • 29,900 € (as of October 16, 2006) or
  • 30,675 € (as of November 30, 2006) or
  • 32,180 € (as of April 2, 2007) or
  • € 32,400 (as of June 1, 2008).

The surcharge list only contained a “premium package” (partial leather upholstery of the seats in ebony black or cobalt red / ebony black, made of PVC: seat cheeks, headrests and door panels, as well as CD changer ) for € 1,285 and brilliant or two-layer metallic paintwork for 205 or € 475, or from June 1, 2006: € 320 (brilliant finish) and € 590 (two-layer metallic finish).
