The Opel Super 6 was an Adam Opel AG passenger car with a water-cooled 2.5-liter six-cylinder in - line engine and rear-wheel drive . It was the successor to the Opel 6 (with a 2-liter six-cylinder engine) and was presented together with the then new Opel top model " Admiral " in February 1937 at the 27th  International Automobile and Motorcycle Exhibition (IAMA) in Berlin and until November Built in 1938.

The construction with a separate chassis made it possible to produce different bodies. In addition to the four-door sedan , two-door convertibles and roadsters were also offered . The "Glasses" Super 6 convertible with a body made by the Gläser-Karosserie GmbH in Dresden was the luxurious gem of this series.

After 46,453 "Super 6" cars had been produced in almost two years, the Opel Kapitän with the same engine followed at the end of 1938 with a self-supporting body.

technology

Like its predecessor, the Super 6 had a box frame with a cross beam and the Opel “ synchronous suspension ” with Dubonnet spring knees on the front axle and a rigid rear axle on semi-elliptical leaf springs. At first there was a simple worm steering, from 1938 a smooth roller steering ( Gemmer steering ). While the Opel 6 with a 2-liter engine had an unsynchronized four-speed gearbox, the larger-capacity Super 6 was fitted with a three-speed gearbox that was used in the II and III. Gear was synchronized .

Like the " Admiral " (with a displacement of 3.6 liters), the Super 6 was the first Opel to have a newly designed 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine with overhead valve control ("hanging valves") and spur-wheel- driven side camshaft, the basic design of which continued until 1966 (except in the " Kadett " produced from 1962 ) in all Opel models.

various

The top speed was 117 km / h; However, the continuous speed of 100 km / h was of greater importance, which marked the car as " motorway-proof ". The windshield wiper was driven by the camshaft via a mechanical clutch ; this was still there until 1958 in the Opel Rekord P1 .

The "Super 6" attracted particular attention due to its comparatively low price of 3350  Reichsmarks (RM). The four-seater convertible cost 4,326 RM. The top model "Admiral" was only available from RM 6500.
