The Opel Antara vehicle was manufactured and sold between summer 2006 and spring 2015. From the beginning of 2016 it was available again in some countries.

It is an off-road sports utility vehicle that was manufactured together with the Chevrolet Captiva at GM Korea (formerly Daewoo) in South Korea . The vehicle was also produced in Shushary , a suburb of Saint Petersburg .

The model series was also offered under different names in various international markets, for example in the USA as Saturn Vue (until 2008), in Australia as Holden Captiva 5 , in South America as Chevrolet Captiva or in Mexico as Chevrolet Captiva Sport . The latter also came to the USA, but was operated there exclusively by car rental companies and in other fleet business. The variant of the Chevrolet Captiva corresponding to the Opel Antara with a shorter rear, which does not allow a third row of seats, was offered in the USA as Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain . The production of these two models did not take place in Korea, but in Ingersoll , Canada.

Model history

The Antara was launched in November 2006. Its sister model, the Chevrolet Captiva, had appeared a month earlier.

Two petrol engines were available for the market launch, a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 103 kW (140 hp) and a 3.2-liter V6 with 167 kW (227 hp). Initially, only the 2.0 CDTI with 110 kW (150 PS) was available as a diesel engine. In May 2007 it was supplemented by a weaker variant (93 kW / 127 PS) with the same displacement.

Facelift

In autumn 2010, the front and rear were adapted to the current Opel brand design.

Changes have also been made to the engines. The 3.2-liter V6 petrol engine was omitted, the 2.4-liter petrol engine now developed 123 kW (167 hp).

Both two-liter diesel units were replaced by two 2.2-liter machines with an output of 120 kW (163 hp) and 135 kW (184 hp), respectively.

The Opel Antara has been on sale again in a few countries (including Austria and Switzerland) since the beginning of 2016. The only available engine is the 2.0 liter diesel from the Insignia with 125 kW (170 hp) from Opel (Kaiserslautern). If the manual 6-speed gearbox is selected, this has an automatic stop-start system and is available with front or all-wheel drive. The variant with the 6-speed automatic can only be combined with front-wheel drive. The engine meets the Euro 6 emissions standard.

Models and equipment

In contrast to its indirect predecessor Frontera, the Antara was only available as a five-door model. It is based on General Motors ' Theta platform , which is also shared by Chevrolet Equinox , Chevrolet Captiva , Saturn Vue and Pontiac Torrent . The aim was to sell 40,000 to 50,000 units annually in Europe.

Equipment variants

There are three different equipment lines for the Antara:

  • Antara
  • Antara Edition Plus
  • Antara Cosmo

The standard equipment until the end of 2008 included an automatically engaged four- wheel drive with traction control - afterwards front-wheel drive as standard -, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, electric windows front and rear, air conditioning , CD radio, front, side and head airbags , ABS , Brake assistant , ESPplus with cornering brake control (CBC) and a hill descent assistant. In addition, were extras like a DVD - navigation system , a sunroof or an electric seat adjustment available.

The top equipment Cosmo had xenon light , 18-inch alloy wheels, rain sensor , cruise control , on-board computer and park pilot .

Speed and acceleration

With the built-in engines, the Antara reaches maximum speeds of 174 to 200 km / h, and acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h takes 8.8 to 12 seconds.

Prices

The list prices range from 26,780 to 40,500 euros (as of September 2012, Germany) for the models with basic equipment.

Market position

In 2010 the Antara was one of the worst-selling models from a German manufacturer on the domestic market, with 1,226 new registrations. The market share of all SUVs was well below half a percent. The sister model Chevrolet Captiva, which is based on the same platform, sold better in the same period with 3006 copies, but only had a market share of around one percent. Within the class of SUVs of comparable length (around 4.6 m), both models together had a market share of around five percent, with this market segment being dominated by higher-priced manufacturers.

A total of 10,505 units of the Antara were built in 2010 and 15,417 in 2011, 8511 and 13,369 of them in Bupyong (Korea) and in 1994 and 2048 in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Since the market launch in 2006 up to and including December 2017, only 22,029 Antara have been newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. Volkswagen was able to sell the Tiguan more than twenty times as much in a similar period of time .

Antara GTC

The Opel Antara GTC study at the IAA 2005

The Antara GTC design study was presented at the IAA 2005 in Frankfurt / Main . In contrast to the Astra H GTC , GTC stands for "Gran Turismo Crossover". It is a crossover model between a coupe and an off-road vehicle .

At the New York Auto Show 2006 the Antara was shown to the American trade fair audience as the Saturn PreVue . Saturn was also a brand in the GM group, but was discontinued in 2009. GM wanted to bundle the competencies of the individual brands, which is why selected models as Saturn and Opel were offered equally in the respective markets. The Opel GT , which was built from the beginning of 2007 to the summer of 2009, roughly corresponded to the Saturn Sky apart from a few details .

Dimensions and data

The study measured 4.53 m in length, 1.97 m in width and 1.64 m in height.

A 1.9 liter CDTI diesel engine with 156 kW (212 hp) served as the drive . The acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h took 8.0 seconds. The top speed was 210 km / h and the torque was 400 Nm.

A 6-speed automatic and all-wheel drive completed the equipment. The all-wheel drive alone, however, did not allow off-road capability, as there was no additional gear reduction and limited slip differentials .

The Antara GTC was equipped with chrome-plated 20-inch wheels and 265 millimeter wide tires.

particularities

  • Both front and rear lights work with LED technology
  • The front seats are mounted on monorails, not as usual on two rails. They glide at your fingertips forward to access to the rear to facilitate ( easy entry ). Seat occupancy detection deactivates the mechanism when the corresponding seat is occupied.
  • As with the Opel Zafira, the rear seats can be folded down and lowered, resulting in a cargo volume of 2,400 liters.
  • The panorama roof construction also comes from the Zafira.
  • The so-called pantograph hinge opens the tailgate so that you don't have to step back when opening it.

Awards

  • Concept car of the year 2005
