The term sunroof usually describes a roof opening system for motor vehicles . There are also sunroofs over stadiums (soccer fields, tennis halls and the like), swimming pools (for example the Gellért Baths in Budapest, opened in 1918) and on or over other structures.

A car sunroof is usually made of a glass lid , a sunscreen and an electric drive. In older vehicles in particular, a steel sunroof or a folding roof was often installed. The electric drive actuates a mechanism via a pressure-resistant cable that moves the cover and, in some cases, the sun protection.

For private or public observatories - instead of an elaborate dome - a low hut with a sliding roof is the simplest solution, in which there is also room for larger amateur telescopes .

With high-quality sliding roofs or technically complex large roofs, two electric drives are often used in order to obtain a completely electric sliding roof that does not require manual operation.

The following sunroof systems are considered state of the art:

  • Sunroof - A roof system in which the lid is moved under the roof skin and then pushed back to create an opening
  • Lifting roof - A lifting roof can be raised at the rear, creating a small opening. It protects against drafts, rain and sun.
  • Spoiler roof - A roof system in which the lid is moved over the roof skin
  • Large roof system - some multi- cover systems that can use the aforementioned variants
  • Module system - a sliding roof system that is installed in the vehicle as a complete system , for example with the roof
  • Folding roof system - a textile roof system, not to be confused with a convertible top
  • Roll-up roof system - A textile roof system, however the roof tarpaulin is rolled up.
  • Louvre roof system - A system consisting of several small glass or sheet metal louvers .
