Previous model Porsche 997
successor Porsche 992

The Porsche 991 is the seventh generation of the Porsche 911 since its introduction in 1963. The sports car was built from 2011 to 2019.

Development and design features

The typical silhouette of the 911 was given a distinctive bead over the exhaust pipes at the rear

The 991 is the first Porsche with a mixed aluminum-steel construction. The bodies of the previous models had become heavier with each generation change due to the increasing demands on safety and comfort. The body shell of the 993 Carrera from 1993 weighed 215 kg, while the 997 from 2003 weighed 280 kg. The 991 was supposed to be lighter than its predecessor despite the 100 mm longer wheelbase and other improvements that resulted in a 51 kg higher mass.

That is why the floor pan of the body, doors and roof were made of aluminum instead of steel. Overall, the body shell of the 991 Carrera Coupé is almost half (44% of the mass) made of aluminum. There were stampings , die-cast components , extruded profiles and internal high pressure formed using aluminum components. Utilizing the material properties resulted in not only lower weight but also advantages in production: The rear longitudinal members, for example, are not only lighter (8.62 kg instead of 14.52 kg per side), they also consist of three instead of 14 parts and there are fewer dimensional deviations due to the integration of the axle mounts in the die-cast part. For assembling the aluminum parts had new joining techniques, such as punch riveting , clinching (clinching), Flow-Drill screw (the screw drills the hole and cut the thread itself), aluminum MIG welding and aluminum stud welding are introduced.

The side parts were still made of steel; On the one hand, the aluminum outer wall could not have been produced in one piece; on the other hand, these parts for the 997 and 991 were to be manufactured for a while on a production line on which only the existing resistance spot welding machines could be used. 16% of the body consists of press-hardened , boron-alloyed steel (22MnB5).

The roof is glued on. There were three variants to choose from: a sporty, light roof made of 1.04 mm thick aluminum sheet and two open roofs with a sliding roof made either from sheet metal or from glass. The floor pan and side panels are also glued and the seams sealed to protect against contact corrosion . Despite the lower weight, the body is stiffer than that of its predecessor and has higher natural frequencies .

Compared to the previous model 997 , the exterior of the 991 has changed only slightly.

The newly designed light-emitting diode tail lights are shallower than the 997. There is also a revised front apron with enlarged air intakes. As with the 993 , the two exterior mirrors are again attached to the two doors, instead of in the window triangle, as was the case with the 996 and 997, as was the case with the revisions of all Porsche models since the Cayenne 92A .

The six-cylinder boxer engines with a displacement between 3.4 and 3.8 liters and gasoline direct injection use up to twelve percent less fuel in the standard cycle thanks to a start-stop system and other measures .

Models

Four months after the presentation of the 991 Carrera Coupé, Porsche celebrated the world premiere of the convertible version of the 991 at the NAIAS in Detroit
The name of the manufacturer "PORSCHE" is written above the model designation "911" on the rear.
Instead of a bonnet, a service flap is now attached to the rear (seen here on the 911 Carrera S)

After the Carrera (as is usual with Porsche), other model variants gradually appeared.

In the further course of 2012, the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 (S) and in the second half of the year the new 911 GT3 Cup appeared.

In 2013, a special model of the Carrera S, limited to 1,963 units, was released on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911, which bears the red digits 50 on the rear in addition to the classic 911 model designation . In the cockpit, the digits light up green like the original 911. The seat covers have a pepita pattern and the 20-inch wheels are reminiscent of the Fuchs rims. Three classic colors (geyser gray metallic, graphite gray metallic and black uni), chrome clips on the apron, windows and rump as well as a sports exhaust system complete the special model. It has the 44 mm wider body, which is actually reserved for the models with all-wheel drive. As an option for a surcharge, there was a factory power upgrade (WLS) with 323 kW (430 PS).

The models Porsche 911 GT3 , the endurance racing car GT3 RSR , the 911 Turbo and the 911 Targa appeared in 2014.

911 Carrera

At the premiere at the IAA, only the rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S were shown as coupes. The corresponding convertible versions came onto the market on March 3, 2012 (four months after the market launch of the two Carrera Coupé models). The all-wheel drive Carrera 4 (S) models were introduced in 2012. The Carrera S models with an output increase from 22 kW (30 PS) to 316 kW (430 PS) have been available since mid-2012.

911 GT3

Porsche 911 type 991.2 GT3 RS 4.0

At the beginning of December 2011 the first prototypes and test vehicles of the 991 GT3 were photographed. Like the GT3 models of the types 996 and 997, the 991 GT3, released in 2013, had a fixed rear wing on the engine cover , as well as front and rear aprons specially made for the model . As a further characteristic design feature, the centrally arranged exhaust pipes below the license plate holder, as in the models of the 997 GT3 V produced between 2006 and 2011, have been retained.

The new generation had a little more power and was still more economical in terms of NEDC consumption. Thanks to the use of lightweight construction materials and reduced comfort features compared to the Carrera models, the curb weight (according to DIN 70020) has been reduced by around 40 kg to around 1350 kg compared to the previous models. This made the 991 GT3 the lightest GT3 model since the model series was presented in 1999.

The 991.1 GT3 was delivered as standard with a dual clutch transmission and rear-axle steering . The facelift model 991.2 GT3, on the other hand, was also available with a conventional manual transmission. There was a recall campaign for vehicles from model year 2013 because two vehicles caught fire.

The Porsche 991 GT3 RS came on the market in May 2015 for 181,690 euros. The 4.0-liter 6-cylinder boxer engine in the rear achieved a maximum output of 368 kW (500 hp) at 8,250 rpm. The maximum torque of 460 Nm was 6,250 rpm. The Porsche 991 GT3 RS was equipped exclusively with the 7-speed dual clutch transmission (PDK). The curb weight of the vehicle was reduced by a further ten kilograms and was 1420 kilograms ready to drive. In 2018 the GT3 RS also received a facelift; its 4.0 liter engine now delivers 383 kW (521 hp), and the torque increased from 460 to 470 Nm.

911 Turbo

As with the predecessor, the top models 911 Turbo and Turbo S bring some new features with them, including rear-axle steering, which makes the vehicle more agile in curves and more stable in straight-line stability. The rear wheels can steer or counter-steer by up to 2.8 degrees, depending on the driving speed, steering angle and driving situation. This leads to a virtual wheelbase change of −250 to +500 millimeters. Other changes compared to the 997 turbo models are the front and rear spoilers, which can now each be extended in three stages. The output of the turbo model is 383 kW (521 hp), that of the Turbo S model is 412 kW (560 hp) or, since the beginning of 2016, 427 kW (580 hp). The Porsche 911 Turbo models are equipped with a sound symposer as standard. This transmits the intake noise of the turbo engine through a membrane into the interior. The variable damping Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) and the roll stabilization PDCC were introduced.

911 Targa

Porsche Targa 4S (991)
Porsche Targa 4S (991)

On January 14, 2014, the Porsche 911 Targa (Type 991) was presented at the Detroit motor show. It has a soft top with a fixed roll bar and one-piece rear window, as has been produced from the first Targa model up to the 964 series. Porsche is promoting this model with the slogan “Imagine meeting your childhood sweetheart again. And it has become even more beautiful. "

This model is offered in the versions 911 Targa 4, 911 Targa 4S and 911 Targa 4 GTS. The roof section between the A-pillar (windshield) and the targa bar (B-pillar) can be extended automatically, similar to the folding roof convertibles from other manufacturers: the entire rear window module is first extended to the rear. Parts of the targa bar are swiveled out to the left and right so that the targa roof can then be put down behind the emergency seats. The rear window module is finally brought back to its starting position. The doors are frameless, so that the area between the A and B pillars is completely open, as was the case with the original Targa models. On May 10, 2014, Porsche launched the model on the market.

The base prices are 109,338 euros for the 911 Targa 4, 124,094 euros for the 911 Targa 4S and 146,228 euros for the 911 Targa 4 GTS.

Special model "50 years 911" (2013)

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, Porsche launched a special model. The vehicle based on the Carrera S was available with a factory performance upgrade upon request. It also got the wider rear of the Carrera GTS and all-wheel drive models. The following colors were available: geyser gray metallic , graphite gray , black . For the interior, agate gray-geyser gray and black-dark silver in retro style from 1963 were available. The seat covers were made of two-tone, woven textile in the Pepita style. The louvers on the hood were also adapted stylistically and wheels the then typical Fuchsfelgen modeled (20 "Trek Classic-Rad). At the rear of the vehicle is decorated with a nameplate in the design of the early years complemented by the red number 50 . Characteristic is the The fact that the 4 × 2 model has the wide rear like the GTS.

In addition, an option package could be ordered for 4,911 euros, which consists of the Sport Chrono Package (analog and digital stopwatches, launch control (slip control when starting up), dynamic engine mounts), Porsche Communication Management (PCM), a telephone module and Park assistant and seat heating existed.

At the end of 2014, the 911 GTS was introduced as an intermediate model between Carrera S and GT3 as Carrera GTS, Carrera 4 GTS, Carrera GTS Cabriolet, Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet and Targa 4 GTS. The GTS 991.1 received an engine with an output of 316 kW (430 PS) and a maximum torque of 440 Nm as well as better equipment, such as larger brake discs (front 350 mm, rear 330 mm), a centrally arranged sports exhaust system (only 991.2) , extended multimedia functions and a Sport Chrono Package with the mode switch derived from the 918 Spyder (only with 991.2) on the GT sports steering wheel for four driving modes (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, Individual). With the optionally available Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), three additional functions were available: a traction control ( launch control ), a 'gearshift strategy' race track and a function called "Sport Response", which enables a maximum of quick response for 20 seconds (only in version 991.2). The Porsche Stability Management (PSM) has also been expanded to include a sport mode; the front axle optionally received a so-called lift system with which the front of the GTS can be raised by approx. 40 mm up to a speed of 35 km / h (only 991.2) . The 4 × 2 variant also got the wide rear. For the GTS, Porsche demanded prices of 125,760 euros (911 Carrera GTS) to 146,228 euros (911 Targa 4 GTS).

911 R special model

Porsche 991 R in the Porsche Museum

In 2016, the R, a special model limited to 991 pieces in view of the model line, was presented. This 368 kW (500 PS) 911 was only available with a manual transmission and should be reminiscent of the older 911 911 models with both the design of the interior, such as the seats made of Pepita fabric and the minimal equipment due to the lightweight construction. It has no fixed, but an extendable rear wing and is 44 mm wider than the 911 Carrera at the rear, according to the factory. This should make it even better on the road. The engine is largely similar to that of the 911 GT3 RS and its driving characteristics have been adapted to the manual transmission. A special feature of the R are the two red or green stripes that run along the entire length of the car. Compared to the production models, the R is also significantly louder, as this model is less about comfort and more about sportiness. Acceleration from 0 to 100 is around 3.8 seconds and the top speed is 323 km / h. The new purchase price at Porsche was 189,544 euros including VAT, but all 991 cars had already been sold before construction began. At the moment the prices for models offered for sale are around 300,000 to 500,000 euros (as of October 2018).

Facelift 2015: 991.2

Cockpit view 991.2 4GTS

At the IAA 2015, Porsche presented a comprehensive facelift. The two basic versions of the 911 (911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S) were delivered for the first time in the history of the 911 with a turbo instead of a naturally aspirated engine from December 12, 2015. In addition, minor external changes were made outside and inside. Standard features are 0.5 inch wider rear wheels, as well as the active chassis PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) , which was previously subject to a surcharge .

The new engine has a displacement of just 3.0 liters instead of the previous 3.4 or 3.8 liters, but it should still achieve more power and lower consumption. Used two turbochargers from BorgWarner and two intercoolers. The difference in performance between the Carrera and Carrera S results from different boost pressures (Carrera 0.9 bar, Carrera S 1.1 bar) and compressors of different sizes (Carrera 49 mm, Carrera S 51 mm), while the exhaust gas turbines are 45 mm in both. The injection nozzles now inject into the combustion chambers from vertically above at a pressure of 250 bar, more than twice as much as before.

911 Turbo S Exclusive special model

Porsche Turbo S Exclusive (991)

In June 2017, Porsche presented a special model limited to 500 copies based on the 911 Turbo S. The Exclusive has an output of 20 kW (27 hp) more and also has a different front hood, side skirts and roof made of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic . The new price in Germany is 259,992 euros including VAT.

The special model for the cabriolet was presented in January 2019. It is limited to 200 copies and is only available in the United States. Nothing changes on the drive side.

911 GT2 RS

As part of the presentation of the video game Forza Motorsport 7 at E3 2017 in Los Angeles , Porsche showed the first pictures of the 515 kW (700 PS) 911 GT2 RS , as the car will be the cover car of the video game.

The sports car was seen in reality for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on June 30, 2017. The engine of the € 285,220 911 GT2 RS is based on that of the 911 Turbo S, but the turbochargers have been enlarged to achieve higher performance .

The 1470 kg vehicle accelerates to 100 km / h in 2.8 seconds and reaches a top speed of 340 km / h.

911 Carrera T

911 Carrera T side view
911 Carrera T rear view

On 23 October 2017, Porsche unveiled the first images of the 911 Carrera T . It is based on the 911 Carrera and has an unchanged output of 272 kW (370 hp). In contrast to the 911 Carrera, a PASM sports suspension with lowering, all-wheel steering (subject to a surcharge) and a mechanical rear-axle locking differential are available. In order to reduce the weight, the rear seats have been removed, and rear and rear side windows made of thinner glass and less insulation material have been installed. The vehicle weight could be reduced by 20 kg to 1,425 kg. A 7-speed manual transmission with a shorter gear ratio is standard, and a dual clutch transmission (PDK) is also available as an option. With the manual gearbox, the car accelerates to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds and with the dual clutch gearbox in 4.2 seconds. The top speed is over 290 km / h. In Germany, the Carrera T costs 107,553 euros including VAT and has been available for order since October 2017; delivery started in January 2018.

911 Targa 4 GTS Exclusive Manufactur Edition

A Targa 4 GTS Exclusive Manufactur Edition, limited to 250 units, was available for the German market from November 2018. The vehicle was presented in the Porsche showroom in Sylt. It is powered by a six-cylinder boxer engine with 2981 cm 3 displacement and twin-turbo charging, which works according to the Otto process and develops a nominal output of 331 kW. The car, which can go up to 306 km / h, has an agate gray metallic paintwork with decorative elements in the colors “white gold metallic” and “brilliant silver”, which largely replace the black components that are otherwise characteristic of GTS models. The interior is kept in shades of brown.
