The Porsche-Interscope "Indy" is a racing car from Dr.-Ing. hc F. Porsche AG .

history

Porsche announced in 1979 that it would drive the Indianapolis 500 the following year . Preparations began at the end of 1978. The engine was to be produced by Porsche and the chassis developed together with the Interscope team. Trials were run with a modified Parnelli chassis. The Hawaiian Danny Ongais (* 1942) was hired as the driver .

The regulations stipulated a maximum displacement of 2650 cm³ for engines with turbochargers . Porsche considered the newly designed engine of the Porsche 935-78 Moby Dick suitable. This had water-cooled cylinder heads and an air-cooled motor housing. However, it had to be converted because methanol was required as the fuel for the Indy races .

The engine was the only 911 derivative in motorsport that could be driven at speeds above 9000 rpm. It also achieved the highest specific output with over 341 hp per liter of displacement. A more stable total output of around 630 hp was planned for racing.

Porsche had to discontinue the project in March 1980 because there had been changes to the regulations in the meantime, which provided for a reduction in the boost pressure . Adaptation to this situation would have been too costly; therefore, Porsche got out of the project and the car went to the museum.

The Interscope team then drove a Cosworth V8 engine .
