The Porsche 787 is a formula racing car from Dr.-Ing. hc F. Porsche KG , which was used in the 1961 Formula 1 season .

history

For the 1961 season, the displacement for Formula 1 vehicles was limited to 1.5 liters. Porsche saw this as an opportunity to get started, as the new regulations hardly differed from the previous Formula 2 . The manufacturer had already celebrated successes with Edgar Barth in a Porsche 550 A Spyder and Jean Behra in a Porsche 718 . The Porsche 787 was nothing more than a Porsche 718/2 monoposto, which was basically several years old . It was powered by the so-called Fuhrmann engine , which developed up to 190 hp (139 kW) at 8000 rpm. In practice, Porsche could not prevail against the dominant Ferraris , driven by Wolfgang Graf Berghe von Trips and Phil Hill , who became world champion. The best Porsche driver was Dan Gurney in third place in the World Championship (fourth if you count the fatally accidental von Trips). For the Formula 1 season in 1962 , the Porsche 804 was an eight-cylinder model that replaced the 787.
