Earl Rivers

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Earl Rivers was a British title of nobility bestowed twice as a hereditary title and once for life in the Peerage of England .

The naming of the title is not derived from a place, therefore not "Earl of Rivers", but from the old family name of the family " Redvers " or "Reviers".

Awards and subordinate titles

The earliest dignity was bestowed on Richard Woodville, 1st Baron Rivers , on May 24, 1466 . This had already been raised on May 9, 1448 to Baron Rivers . His son, who later became 2nd Earl, had been married to Elizabeth Wydville, 8th Baroness Scales since 1464 and was 8th Baron Scales by virtue of her right . At her death, 1473, that title fell into Abeyance . The earl dignity and the barony of Rivers expired on March 5, 1491, when the third earl died without male descendants.

The second bestowal was on November 4, 1626 to Thomas Darcy, 1st Viscount Colchester . As early as July 5, 1621, he had been given the title Viscount Colchester . In addition, in 1581 he had inherited the title of 3rd Baron Darcy of Chiche from his father , which had been conferred on his grandfather in 1551. Since the 1st Earl's only son had died childless, he was given the title of Baron Darcy of Chiche again in 1613, this time with the special addition that this title was also given to his brother-in-law Thomas Savage, 1st Viscount Savage, in the absence of his own male descendants (1586–1635) and his male descendants are hereditary. The earldom and viscountcy awards also contained a corresponding addition in favor of this brother-in-law. At his death in 1640, the baron title of 1551 expired and the other titles, since his brother-in-law had died in 1635, accordingly to his son John Savage, 2nd Viscount Savage as 2nd Earl. He had inherited the titles Viscount Savage and Baronet , of Rocksavage in the County of Chester, from his father, which had been awarded to him in 1626 and 1611 respectively. All of his titles expired in 1735 with the death of his descendant, the 5th Earl.

On April 21, 1641 Elizabeth Savage , the widow of the aforementioned Thomas Savage, 1st Viscount Savage and daughter of Thomas Darcy, 1st Earl Rivers, was raised to Countess Rivers and Viscountess Colchester for life . These non-hereditary titles ( Life Peerage ) expired on her death on March 9, 1651.
