Baron Rivers

Baron Rivers was a hereditary British nobility title awarded twice in the Peerage of England and once each in the Peerage of Great Britain and the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Awards and subordinate titles

The title was first created on February 6, 1299 in the Peerage of England for John Rivers , when he was appointed to the royal parliament by Writ of Summons . The title expired with the death of his son, the 2nd baron, around 1340.

In the second bestowal, the title was bestowed on May 9, 1448 in Peerage of England by Letters Patent to Richard Woodville . On May 24, 1466 he was also elevated to Earl Rivers . His son, who later became 2nd Earl, had been married to Elizabeth Wydville, 8th Baroness Scales since 1464 and was 8th Baron Scales by virtue of her right . At her death, 1473, that title fell into Abeyance . The earl dignity and the barony of Rivers expired on March 5, 1491, when the third earl died without male descendants.

In the third award, the title of Baron Rivers , of Strathfield-Say in the County of Southampton , was bestowed on May 20, 1776 in the Peerage of Great Britain to George Pitt . Since his only son remained unmarried, the 1st Baron was also awarded the title Baron Rivers , of Sudeley Castle in the County of Gloucester on April 1, 1802 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , with the special addition that he in the absence of male descendants also to his brother General Sir William Augustus Pitt and his male descendants, as well as, in the absence of these, to the son of his eldest daughter William Beckford and his male descendants. With the death of the 2nd Baron, the barony of 1776 expired and the barony of 1802 fell to William Beckford as 3rd Baron, who changed his surname to "Pitt-Rivers" with royal permission. The latter title finally expired on March 31, 1880 when the 6th Baron died.
