The title was first created on April 5, 1551 by letters patent for Sir Thomas Darcy , lord of Chiche, now St Osyth , in Essex .

His grandson, the 3rd Baron, had three daughters, but his only son Thomas Darcy had died childless before 1613. For this reason, he was awarded the title again on October 8, 1613, this time with the special inheritance regulation that the title, in the absence of male descendants, was also given to his son-in-law Sir Thomas Savage, 2nd Baronet (1586-1635), the husband of his eldest daughter Elizabeth, as well as her male descendants, is inheritable. With the same inheritance regulation, he was also raised to Viscount Colchester on July 5, 1621 and to Earl Rivers on November 4, 1626 . When he died on February 21, 1640, the barony of 1551 became extinct. His son-in-law, who had also been made Viscount Savage in 1626 , had already died, so that the barony of 1613, the Viscountcy Colchester and the Earldom Rivers passed to his son, John Savage, 2nd Viscount Savage , fell. All of his titles eventually expired on the death of his grandson, 5th Earl Rivers, on May 9, 1737.
