Porsche 901 was the original sales name of the Porsche 911 when it was presented at the Frankfurt IAA in 1963.

Porsche only considers the 1973 Porsche 911 G to replace the Porsche 901.

Model history

On September 12, 1963, the new Porsche 901 was presented at the Frankfurt IAA , and in October 1964 it was also presented at the Paris Motor Show, where the French motor vehicle manufacturer Peugeot - which has held the rights to all three-digit type designations with a zero since the 1920s in the middle for automobiles had been protected - became aware of the use of a model name protected by him by a third-party manufacturer and pointed out Porsche to its own rights. Porsche reacted to this and changed the model name to Porsche 911 , but by autumn 1964 had already been able to sell 82 copies of the 901 Coupé , which was equipped with a 96 kW (130 hp), air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine and had a basic price of DM 21,900 .

This naming regulation, which made it almost impossible for all other automobile manufacturers to name their models with a three-digit combination - provided there is a zero in the middle - also affected other street-legal sports cars such as the Porsche 904 , which was sold as the Carrera GTS , and the Porsche 906 , which was named Carrera 6 . The Porsche 907 , Porsche 908 , Porsche 909 , as racing cars without street approval, were not likely to be confused with Peugeot road cars and could therefore also compete in races under these names.

Trivia

In the summer of 2014, the model attracted a certain amount of media attention when a copy of a Porsche 901 in need of restoration (number 57 of 82 built) was discovered in a warehouse near Potsdam as part of the RTL II TV documentary soap Der Trödeltrupp . The owner offered the vehicle to the Porsche Museum Stuttgart for sale after being mediated by the TV production team. Because of its history and because a body from this series is extremely rare, those responsible at the Porsche Museum were willing to buy it, and the car moved to Stuttgart for 107,000 euros. The fully restored 901 should be presented to the public there from 2018.
