The Porsche 911 GT2 is the sports version of the Porsche 911 Turbo , analogous to the sports version of the 911 Carrera , which is called 911 GT3 . Compared to the 911 Turbo , the GT2 has pure rear- wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive and more power and more torque . In addition, its equipment is greatly reduced in comfort, which improves the power-to-weight ratio and the GT2 is therefore designed to be more dynamic than the Turbo.

The indirect predecessor of the first 911 GT2 (type 993) was the Porsche 911 Turbo S-LeMans GT (type 964) . Like the GT2, the Turbo S-LM GT was a motorsport version of the Turbo, which offered better performance thanks to a lower power-to- weight ratio, thanks to the lack of equipment and weight optimization, as well as a revised chassis and a more powerful engine .

The designation GT2 has only historically to do with the motorsport regulations of the same name . After the regulations were changed by the FIA in 2000, the 911 GT2 should have started in the most powerful category. However, no motorsport version of the 911 GT2 was developed for these regulations. For the now less powerful GT2, Porsche homologated the turbocharged GT3 . After 2000, a number of attempts by various external companies to upgrade the GT2 in the more powerful GT class were unable to match the results of the racing version of the 993 GT2.

In contrast to the 996 GT2, the Porsche GT2 models of type 993 are street or homologation versions for racing cars . Characteristic of this model of the Porsche 911 are the riveted fender flares and the rear wing borrowed from the Porsche 993 Carrera RS Clubsport .

The first version of the 911 GT2 appeared in 1995 on the basis of the then current Porsche 911 Turbo type 993. With the revised 911 turbo engine M 64/60 - which was now called M 64/60 R - it achieved a maximum of 316 kW (430 PS) at 5,750 min −1 and had a maximum torque of 540 Nm at 4,500 min −1 . A total of 172 copies of this version were produced, which was sufficient for homologation of the Porsche 911 GT2. It was built from 1995 to 1997 and sold at base prices between DM 268,000 in the 1995 model year and DM 278,875 in the 1997 model year. In the tests of cars, motors and sports , 0-100 km / h were measured in 3.9 seconds and a top speed of 296 km / h. The 1995 offered and 330 kW (450 hp) racing version, which from 1998 even with 345 kW (485 hp ) at 5,750 min -1 was able to come and a maximum of 665 Nm of torque and the designation 911 GT2 R wore was customer teams at that base price of 506,000 DM .

The revised model, which was based on the 993 Turbo again from 1998, was the last air-cooled series of the 911 GT2. In contrast to its air-cooled predecessor, the Porsche GT2 of the type 996 is a model variant of the 911 built exclusively for road use, and not a homologation model for a racing version. However, it also has a plurality of motor sport derived features like the one on Unibal mounted cardan joints chassis, the height, track and camber can be adjusted. In addition, the 996 GT2, like the 911 GT3, was available as a Clubsport version. It was the first Porsche to have the carbon-ceramic brake as standard .

First series of the 996 GT2

The first water-cooled GT2 appeared in August 2000, presented at the North American International Auto Show . In contrast to the 309 kW (420 PS) 996 Turbo, it has 340 kW (462 PS) (i.e. 10% more power) and a max. Torque of 620 Nm between 3500 and 4500 rpm. This accelerates the 1440 kg car to 100 km / h in 4.1 s and reaches a top speed of 315 km / h. At the new price of 339,000 DM at the time of the market launch, a total of 963 copies were sold by April 2003.

From April 2003, Porsche offered its customers a revised version (MK2) that did not differ externally from its predecessor (apart from the 18-inch, 10-spoke light alloy wheels in “GT3 styling” that had been available since 2003 from the 996 GT3 ) , but rather could again set power and torque and is now 355 kW (482 hp) at 5700 min -1 and 640 Nm of torque from 3500 to 4500 min -1 could offer. The curb weight could be reduced to 1420 kg and the top speed increased to 319 km / h . Due to the increased performance with reduced weight, the sprinting ability could be improved enormously. The revised GT2 completed the standard sprint to 100 km / h in the auto, motor und sport magazine , contrary to the factory specification of 4.0 seconds in 3.9 s and from 0 to 200 km / h in 11.9 s.

The 996 GT2 MK2 was only built in very small numbers. The MK2 models can be ordered from April 2003 and were delivered from model year 2004 (MY 2004). 75 left-hand drive MK2s (11 of them in model year 2005) and 20 right-hand drive MK2s were built.

The left-hand drive models are distributed globally in the markets as follows:

In Germany (as of January 1, 2013) 13 GT2 MK2s (TSN 489) are still registered. Including the only black Clubsport GT2 MK2 that was ever delivered with a German country code.

The 911 GT2 Type 997 was presented at the IAA 2007 in Frankfurt. It has 390 kW (530 hp) at 6500 / min and a maximum of 680 Nm of torque in the speed range between 2,200 min -1 and 4500 min -1 . With an acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.7 s and a top speed of 329 km / h, the 997 GT2 is the most powerful and fastest production 911 to date, and with a base price of € 189,496, it was also the most expensive street-legal production 911 to date .

The well-known 3.6 l six-cylinder boxer engine from the 997 Turbo forms the basis for the power unit of the current GT2. Above all, the newly developed expansion suction system with higher power efficiency ensures the power increase of 37 kW (50 PS) . The slightly increased boost pressure of the two modified turbochargers and the improved cooling performance of the charge air cooler also increase the power output. In addition, a main silencer and tailpipes made of titanium are used for the first time in a Porsche .

In addition to reduced comfort equipment and the waiver of all-wheel drive, the rear emergency seats and insulation contribute to weight reduction, so the 997 GT2 comes to 1515 kg curb weight (DIN). A clubsport package is optionally available, which includes a screwed roll cage , holder for fire extinguishers and red 6-point racing belts from Schroth .

In terms of chassis technology, the 997 GT2 relies on some components of the 997 GT3. These include height-adjustable spring struts front and rear, special, play-free dome bearings, adjustable anti-roll bars and standard-fitted Michelin sports tires on special 19-inch light alloy wheels. However, the wheels are even larger than on the GT3. As with the previous 996 GT2, the brake discs are made of carbon ceramic .

Another new development is the acceleration aid called Launch Assistant , which for the first time in a vehicle with a manual transmission regulates the power fully automatically when sprinting from a standstill close to the grip limit of the drive wheels. The clutch remains closed during acceleration, and the drive wheels are prevented from spinning by means of automatic power regulation.

The Porsche 997 GT2 lapped the Nordschleife in the Sport Auto Supertest in the fabulous time of 7:33 minutes. It is only half a second slower than the much more powerful and more expensive Porsche Carrera GT (7: 32.44 min.). In 2008 Walter Röhrl drove a time of 7: 32.18 minutes in the GT2 on the occasion of an AutoBild test.

On May 12, 2010, Porsche presented an RS version of the GT2 limited to 500 units with a revised 3.6-liter twin-turbo 6-cylinder boxer engine, with an output of 456 kW (620 hp) thanks to the use of CFRP Materials for u. a. Trunk lid, rear window made of plastic, a single-mass flywheel and much more, further reduced curb weight of 1370 kg according to DIN. In the Auto Bild test , the GT2 RS achieved acceleration values ​​of 3.5 s to 100 km / h, 9.4 s to 200 km / h, 15.0 s to 250 km / h, 26.7 s to 300 km / h and 400 meters from a standing start in 11.0 seconds. The top speed is specified as a regulated 330 km / h. The lap time on the Nordschleife is officially stated by Porsche as 7:18 minutes.

On October 20, 2010, Porsche announced in a press release that the entire 500 copies of the GT2 RS, which cost at least 237,578 euros, were sold out less than two months after being presented at the Moscow Motor Show.

In July 2011 the American Jeff Zwart competed in the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with an only slightly modified GT2 RS ( starting number 111) . Zwart came second in the "Time Attack 2WD" class with a time of 11: 07.869 minutes . The 911 GT2 RS Type 991 was presented on the occasion of the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June 2017. However, the first images were already shown during the presentation of the video game Forza Motorsport 7 at E3 2017 in Los Angeles , as the car adorns the cover of the video game. The 6-cylinder twin-turbo boxer engine has an output of 515 kW (700 hp) and accelerates the vehicle to 100 km / h in 2.8 seconds. After 8.3 seconds, 200 km / h are reached, the top speed is 340 km / h. The base price of the 1470 kg GT2 RS is 285,220 euros.

This data is made possible by lightweight construction in the form of carbon fiber reinforced plastic for the fenders , front and rear lids and the rear wing. Lightweight polyurethane is used for the front and rear sections, the rear and side windows are made of lightweight glass. The roof is made of magnesium and the rear silencer is made of titanium .

On September 20, 2017, Lars Kern set the fastest lap time for street-legal sports cars on the Nordschleife with 6: 47.3 minutes . In the summer of 2018, this record temporarily went to the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ , until Lars Kern set a new best time of 6: 40.3 minutes on October 25, 2018. The Porsche 911 (991) GT2 RS Clubsport, which is a racetrack version of the GT2 RS, was presented at the LA Auto Show 2018. The GT2 RS Clubsport is limited to 200 pieces and is designed for use at club sport events and selected motorsport events, for example as part of the SRO GT2 class announced from 2019.
