The Porsche 919 Hybrid (spelling: 919 hybrid) is a prototype from the LMP1 sports car class that competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) (including the 24 Hours of Le Mans ) from 2014 to 2017 .

The rollout of the car took place on June 12, 2013, almost two years after the announcement by Dr. Ing.hc F. Porsche AG , to compete in the 24-hour race of Le Mans with a works team .

development

On June 30, 2011, Porsche announced that it would be competing with a works team at Le Mans for the first time in 2014 . 16 years after the double victory of the Porsche 911 GT1 at the 24-hour race at Le Mans in 1998 , Porsche wanted to compete in the top class for the first time with the new LMP1 and thus compete for the overall victory. During 2013 Timo Bernhard , Romain Dumas , Brendon Hartley , Neel Jani , Marc Lieb and Mark Webber were announced as drivers.

technology

The monocoque of the vehicle is a closed sandwich construction made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic ( "Carbon") having a honeycomb core made of aluminum . It is reinforced on the sides by additional panels to ensure more safety in the event of a side impact. The wheels are individually suspended, the adjustable shock absorbers are operated by push rods. The ventilated brake discs on the front and rear axles are made of carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide ceramic, the brake calipers are made of light metal.

According to the regulations, Porsche as a works team is obliged to compete with a hybrid vehicle that has an electric drive in addition to the conventional combustion engine . In the 919 hybrid one is charged V4 - gasoline engine used with two liters of displacement, the two energy recovery systems is supported. The engine has an aluminum housing, direct injection and dry sump lubrication . The engine management was developed by Robert Bosch GmbH , the power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a sequential, hydraulically operated transmission with seven forward gears.

In addition to the recovery of braking energy at the front wheels, electrical energy is also generated using a generator driven by the exhaust gas flow using the turbo-compound principle ; the additional exhaust gas turbine for the generator replaces the wastegate . The electrical energy is stored in water-cooled lithium-ion batteries that were developed in cooperation with the manufacturer A123 Systems . When accelerating, the energy is transferred to the front wheels via a differential , so that the rear-wheel drive vehicle is temporarily driven over all wheels. Up to eight megajoules of energy can be emitted per lap . This corresponds to 2.22 kWh or around 8000 kWs, with full energy storage the electric motor can be operated at full power of 294 kW (2015 configuration), i.e. around 27 seconds per lap.

The power of the internal combustion engine is specified with more than 370 kW (503 PS), the power of the electric motor with more than 184 kW (250 PS) in the configuration for 2014 and more than 294 kW (400 PS) in the configuration for 2015.

The car runs on radial tires from Michelin , the rims come from BBS and are forged from magnesium .

successes

The car achieved a hat trick with three consecutive overall victories at the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2015 , 2016 and 2017 . The 2015 winning vehicle was able to recuperate a total of 876.9 kWh over a total of 395 laps.

On April 9, 2018, Porsche announced that it had set an unofficial lap record of 1: 41.770 minutes with an Evo version of the 919 Hybrid - driven by Porsche works driver Neel Jani - on the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps . This was achieved through extensive improvements to the car, as Porsche was no longer bound by the technical regulations of the LMP1 class. The aerodynamics were further improved: Porsche stated that it would generate 53 percent more contact pressure with a larger front diffuser, a wider rear wing, the use of a DRS system and other measures . The internal combustion engine was not further developed, but through an increased flow rate the output could be increased from 370 kW to 535 kW. In addition, the energy recovery systems were able to generate more energy during braking and through the exhaust gas energy, which increased the output of the electric motor to 328 kW. The chassis has been adapted to the faster speed: the front and rear wheel carriers have been reinforced and the power of the power steering increased. The weight of the car has been reduced by 39 kg by eliminating unnecessary parts such as air conditioning, windscreen wipers, electronic units, lighting and the jacking device. Furthermore, Michelin has developed a new tire compound for the vehicle.

On June 29, 2018, Porsche works driver Timo Bernhard set a new best time of 5: 19.546 minutes with the 919 Hybrid Evo on the Nordschleife . This improved the previous record by 51.58 seconds. The average speed of the record lap was 234.69 km / h.
