The Porsche Boxster is a roadster from Porsche with a boxer engine in a mid-engine arrangement. The prototype was presented at the Detroit Motor Show in early 1993 . The first generation was launched in Germany in August 1996. Since 2005, the Porsche Cayman Coupé, based on the second generation Boxster (Type 987), has also been available with the same engine . Since 2016, both body variants have been marketed as a model 718 with the respective previous name as an addition: Porsche 718 Boxster or Porsche 718 Cayman .
The third (type 981) and since 2016 the fourth (type 982) generation has been on the market since 2012. Due to the high demand for the third generation, production began on September 19, 2012, in addition to the main plant in Stuttgart - Zuffenhausen , in the former Karmann plant in Osnabrück , today's Volkswagen Osnabrück .
Model history
In the early 1990s, Porsche got into a sales and earnings crisis. During this time and the roadster boom that the Mazda MX-5 had started , the decision to develop a mid-engine roadster was made. The result of this development work was the Porsche Boxster, the name of which is a made-up word made up of the first syllable of the word Boxer and the second syllable of the word Roadster . Its design is a reinterpretation of the formal language of old Porsche roadsters such as B. the models 550 Spyder , 718 RS 60 (the design of which was also decisive for the Carrera GT godfather) and the first Porsche, the 356 No. 1 Roadster .

The first Porsche Boxster (internal code 986) appeared in 1996 (V program) with a water-cooled 2.5-liter six-cylinder engine with 150 kW (204 hp) and was considered the successor to the classic Porsche 550 "Spyder" from the 1950s. Years. It contained a large number of components from the Porsche 911 ( model 996 ) , which was released a year later , which initially brought with Porsche a lot of criticism due to the lack of differentiation. With a starting price of DM 76,500 (approx. 39,100 euros) it attracted new customers to the brand and started the boom years for Porsche in the mid / late 1990s.
What set the Boxster apart from its competitors when it first appeared was the relatively large amount of space it offered. Thanks to its mid-engine concept, it has a trunk each at the front and rear. The standard electrically operated convertible top is located in a convertible top compartment above the engine; At first it could only be opened and closed when it was stationary. There was criticism for the look of the light units, which took getting used to, and which quickly got the nickname fried egg lights .
In 1997, part of the Boxster production was outsourced to the Finnish company Valmet Automotive , based in Uusikaupunki . In the 2000/2001 financial year (Jan. 31), 23,294 of a total of 28,457 Boxster and Boxster S models were produced in Uusikaupunki. The contract with Valmet initially ran until 2004 and was then extended to 2008 with an option for an extended partnership until 2011. 109,213 first generation Boxsters were produced in Finland from 1997 to 2004. The production locations of the vehicles can be identified from the chassis number: A U (Uusikaupunki) or S (Stuttgart) in front of the following six-digit number indicates the Finnish or German origin.
In 2000, the entry-level Boxster received an engine enlarged to 2.7 liters, which now developed 162 kW (220 hp). Furthermore, the series was supplemented by the Boxster S with a 3.2-liter engine with 185 kW (252 hp), which allowed the Boxster to accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 5.9 seconds. Even before the model change to the 987, the Boxster underwent a final facelift and an increase in performance thanks to the new Motronic and VarioCam : the Boxster now developed 168 kW (228 hp), the Boxster S 191 kW (260 hp).
In the 2004 model year there was the special anniversary model "50 Years of the 550 Spyder", which was limited to 1953 units, of which 372 vehicles came onto the German market. The anniversary model was exclusively delivered in the GT silver metallic color developed for the Carrera GT , the interior is dominated by leather in the new Cocoa color, which also carries the soft top. As an alternative, anthracite-colored leather and a black hood could be chosen. With 987 technology in some cases, the anniversary model has an output of 195 kW (266 hp) and is specified with an increased top speed of 266 km / h. The basic price of the special model, which is already equipped with extensive extras, was 59,192 euros.

The successor to the Porsche 986 was introduced on November 27, 2004. This Boxster (internal code 987) is externally almost identical to the previous model. The headlights, which were often criticized for their shape on the previous model, had been redesigned and adapted to the Porsche 911. This makes the car appear more powerful and its appearance harmonizes more with the larger Porsche model. The interior with a new steering wheel, a modified center console and other door panels has also been redesigned. The electric convertible top can now be opened and closed at speeds of up to 50 km / h. A sport design package is available for both Boxster models.
In keeping with tradition, the new model had increased its output and offered 176 kW (240 PS) or 206 kW (280 PS) for the Boxster S when it was launched.
For the 2007 model year (from mid-2006), the more powerful engines with 180 kW (245 PS) or 217 kW (295 PS) from the Cayman / Cayman S were also incorporated into the Boxster / Boxster S. That same year, the limited edition of 1,960 copies special model appeared "RS 60 Spyder" whose design at the at hill climb very successful race car 718 RS 60 Spyder recalled. The Boxster RS 60 Spyder has the 3.4-liter six-cylinder of the Boxster S. A modified exhaust system, consisting of a sports exhaust system in conjunction with a twin tailpipe, increases the output to 223 kW (303 hp). The top speed is 274 km / h and the sprint from 0-100 km / h can be achieved in 5.4 seconds. The biggest changes are in the cockpit, Carrera red leather, stainless steel door sills, a new gear lever, "RS 60 Spyder" embossing on the center panels of the sports seats and the door panel mirrors, as well as on the steering wheel rim and handbrake lever and redesigned combination displays. The also standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), an electronic system for adjusting the shock absorbers, ensures sporty and comfortable driving behavior.
The model year 2009 (from February 2009) is characterized by new engines with an electronically demand-controlled oil pump, slightly larger displacement and more power; The weaker model also has the larger brake discs of the Boxster S at the front, although only the Boxster S, like the 911, is now powered by a DFI (Direct Fuel Injection) engine with direct fuel injection . The Boxster S has 4 mm thicker rear brake discs and red brake calipers instead of black. The 7-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), which has been offered in the 911 model since July 2008, replaces the previously offered 5-speed Tiptronic.
The Boxster Spyder was first shown at the LA Auto Show in December 2009. It is based on the legendary Porsche 550 Spyder from 1955. The Spyder has a 3.4-liter six-cylinder with 235 kW (320 hp) and accelerates to 100 km / h in 5.1 seconds with a manual transmission. It weighs 1275 kg the lightest model of the brand and the top speed of the Spyder is 267 km / h. Instead of an electric hood, there is a manually assembled 2-part hood that the Spyder stows under a long hood with two hoods. Other changes to the normal Boxster are a lower center of gravity, various changes to reduce weight (such as simple loops instead of handles in the doors) and a completely new sports suspension. The Boxster Spyder was built only 1,667 times until 2011.
Since the beginning of 2011, Porsche has been testing a total of three research vehicles based on the Boxster with a purely electric drive (“Boxster E”) as part of the “Model Region Electromobility Region Stuttgart” project .

After four years of development, the third generation of the Porsche Boxster was introduced in Germany on April 14, 2012. The price of the new model starts at 49,243.00 euros, for the Porsche Boxster S it is at least 60,191.00 euros. The new aluminum hybrid shell with 55 kilograms less weight and 60 millimeters more wheelbase as well as a newly designed chassis mean even more sportiness. Despite around 7 kW more power, the 981 model consumes around ten percent less fuel, which in addition to weight reduction is also achieved with a standard start-stop system and electromechanical instead of the old hydraulic steering.
The most striking design elements are the side indentations in the doors and the wind deflector at the rear that extends into the rear lights. The line of the fabric soft top has become more flowing so that it no longer looks so attached. As in the Panamera and 911, the side mirrors are now attached to the doors instead of the triangular windows. The center console has also been adapted to these models and is based on the design of the Carrera GT. The interior space and, above all, the adjustment range of the seats has grown and now offers space for people over 1.90 m in length. Compared to its predecessor, the electric convertible top opens three seconds faster in nine seconds at a speed of up to 50 km / h.

In 2016, the Porsche Boxster (facelift of the 981 with the new series designation 982) was given the 718 suffix. Since then, it has been powered by a four-cylinder boxer with turbocharger instead of a six-cylinder boxer engine without supercharging.
The displacement drops in the basic variant from 2.7 l to 2.0 l and in the S variant from 3.4 l to 2.5 l. The charging leads to an increase in performance. This increases to 220 kW (300 PS) in the basic variant and to 257 kW (350 PS) in the S variant.
Depending on the variant, fuel consumption drops by around 0.9–1.0 l / 100 km. The models are also available with the new LED headlights.
Technical specifications
The Porsche Boxster is offered in three versions - as Boxster, Boxster S and later as Boxster GTS.
